Reviews of my public speaking courses

Here are two types of testimonials.

  1. Start off with the short rave reviews just in case you don't have time to read the second type, the longer feedback that I post every month.

  2. The more detailed reviews in many ways are more useful as they will give you far more of a flavour of the courses and the changes that the person wanted.  Everyone who comes to my courses wants to change how they feel about public speaking.

I’ve got feedback in digital form back to 2008 but it’s over 250 pages of A4! So here is five years of reviews rather than 16 years! Have a look also at the post-course success stories so you can find out about the long term impact of my public speaking courses.

Short reviews about my public speaking courses and coaching

For me, the course was life changing. I have substantially lost the consuming self-critical and self-conscious disposition I had before. I can't thank you enough. The method / approach was incredibly effective"
Paul

If I am completely honest I did hesitate when I first wanted to book onto this course. I knew it was a big amount of money to invest in a course and I was hesitant but had a gut feeling it would be worth it. After completing the course I can happily say the knowledge, experience and feeling of confidence and belief in myself after completing the two days is priceless. Thanks John.
Tabatha

This course is not just public speaking, it’s life skills for those who struggle with anxiety in social situations. I’m so glad you do what you do and you pass your knowledge onto others to help them ‘better’ their lives.
Emma

John's passion and empathy was the most genuine I have ever experienced from any teacher or facilitator I have ever worked with.
Adam

For so many people like myself with a fear of public speaking, it feels like there is 'no way out'. With your course, there is. I thought the course was life-changing.
Paul

The course has made a huge difference to my work and personal life - thank you.
Alice

I nailed the wedding! Actually really enjoyed it, had tearful parents of the bride and groom telling me it couldn't have been better!
Simon

I never thought after so long anything could help me, but your course has changed my life.
Daniel Kelly

You have helped shift my thinking in relation to standing up in front of a group of people. This felt like one of the most valuable training courses I’ve ever been on.
Ruth Archer

John's approach is unique, authentic and not at all scary. I entered believing public speaking was a pressured, perfectionist, fearful thing and leave realising its just a chat and it's ok to be myself in front of others.
Nat Harrison

Not only is John an expert, he's an expert who really cares. That's why the course felt so powerful.
Sophie Brooks

Your course was a pivotal moment, life changing even. 8 years on I’m a senior leader in a school, speaking to large (bored looking!) audiences all the time. You have given me confidence to go for promotion and not hide anymore.
Jen

This is the best possible course for anyone who is terrified of public speaking. John’s methods are incredibly powerful and have made a dramatic change in my perception of public speaking, furthermore the methods he uses are not just effective in public speaking, they are an incredible tool for overall social confidence. I only wish I did this earlier in my life!!
Damian Harte

Your course was the best investment of time and money I have made in my education/development in a very long time
Sarah (a Doctor working in Trauma)

The difference that I feel towards presenting is astounding and I’m amazed that this was possible in just two days. I struggle to remember any course that I’ve been on, and there has been many, that I’ve enjoyed more.
Kelvin Jones

It is very clear you have dedicated serious time to developing your approach and working out the best ways to hold space for people.
Adam Telford

Having been in medicine for nearly 20 years and a GP for 10, I am embarrassed to say that most of the content of the course was a complete revelation to me and pound for pound undoubtably the most effective self awareness and improvement course I have attended. I have been using some of the techniques this week in clinic and it's fabulous. I felt completely enthralled and really didn't want it to finish and I have realised that so much of the conventional tuition if there is any in professional life is misguided and your techniques are very sound and inspiring. I cannot thank you enough. One of my passions is life is to be in company of other professionals who are as passionate about their field as i am.
Will Mangar

You have given me tools for life.
Ella

The course far exceeded my expectations and the insights will last a lifetime. Yesterday I spoke in front of a sea of blank (if not critical looking) faces and I saw them completely differently -I shone - thank you so much!
Rachel Day

I am finally allowing myself to be myself and it feels comfortable. I am no longer afraid. I am no longer ashamed. I am me.
Monica

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, John. It was such a good course and I’ve done a lot of courses in my life.
A Doctor

Truly transformational, more than I ever thought possible! Together with my eye-lasering operation it probably was the best money I ever spent on myself!
Sanne de Vries

You’ve been the only person to have actually helped me conquer this fear and I searched for decades!
Jamie

It was clear that more than anything, you want to help people, not just to speak in public and better control their anxiety, but to live the life they want to with courage and authenticity.
David

This course is truly life changing! Sneaky and magical, all rolled into one! I wish I had known about it sooner!
Amy

John - I love the profound depth to where this work has taken you!
Lee Glickstein

You do beautiful work John.

As doctors we go to an awful lot of training courses - I have never been to such a stimulating and well-thought out course.

Public speaking course reviews from this month to all the way back to 2019…

November 2024

Dear John,
I’m so glad that I attended this course - it’s had quite a profound impact on me, for broader reasons than anticipated. Truly, thank you for all of your support - this has been a great life experience.
Warmest regards,
Kirsty

What did you want from the course?
Feeling less anxious about public speaking. It had become a crippling thought and was impacting my wellbeing (both by trying to avoid it whenever I could, or having months of build up).

Did you get it?
I have a new sense of perspective about how I allowed this to build up in my head. I do not have the same fear about audiences, I feel more comfortable with the uncomfortable and generally being ‘seen’. I feel less pressure about what I’m saying and how I’m delivering it. Most importantly, I have a new sense of how to kind to myself which doesn’t involve avoiding things that make me uncomfortable. A unique experience connecting with some lovely people with similar concerns. A sense of pride for taking part and enjoyment from seeing others grow too. I hadn’t realised some other ways I was overthinking what people might think of me. I generally feel more confident in myself.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
The course was fantastic and the facilitation was perfect. The first day was intense so if it could end just half an hour earlier, without missing the content, that might have helped. (facing our fears even with lots of care and groundrules makes for a harder day than normal!- JD)

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
The personal connection. Relaxed environment. Size of the group.

October 2024

Hi John

I hope you are well. First of all, apologies for my delay in emailing you back. Things have been pretty hectic and I wanted to make sure I properly articulated my feedback to your course.

And after almost a month, I actually don’t know if I can tell you properly. But here is a news article that hopefully can demonstrate the impact of the course - Here Sam gave me a link to a national newspaper article that reported what he said at a conference.

In particular, the second paragraph is a quote from myself speaking at the conference the Tuesday after your course. I was able to speak with passion, with determination, which without you I would never have done. Mic’d up, I felt free to speak my mind. John, you enabled me to speak my mind, and I thank you for that.

I find myself thinking about future speaking events with excitement. They are now a chance for me to inspire others, because you made it ok for me to do that. You made me feel I had a voice that’s worth hearing. I will help a lot of people because of the help you provided me.

In terms of feedback questions:

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to be able to articulate the voice in my head. I wanted to get on top of physical signs of nerves.

Did you get it?
As soon as I stopped caring about of getting on top of physical signs of nerves, they seemed to leave anyway. As I say, I’m excited about speaking now. On the course we start to have a different relatinship to anxiety

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Genuinely don’t think it could be. There were parts of the course I didn’t resonate with, such as speaking to strangers in public - one on one conversations has never been a concern for me, but I know that part did resonate strongly with other members of the group.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
Openness, the fact we didn’t feedback on others. I know l can speak on my own now, without needing approval from others.

John, I can’t thank you enough.

All the best
Sam

Short review about a Manchester course from somebody who has been on lots and lots of courses
Thank you for everything - the course is absolutely wonderful!! The way you teach and deliver it is just incredible. It is so clever and unique in how it achieves its objectives in giving individuals confidence about public speaking. As doctors we go to an awful lot of training courses - I have never been to such a stimulating and well-thought out course.
all the best

Another James aka as Jamie writes about a two day course in Manchester

Hi John
The course was incredibly helpful and it was exactly what I needed (even though I wasn’t 100% sure what it was that I needed) – thank you. The ability to unpick a lifetime of habits and thoughts in two days is quite remarkable. Thank you John, it was a brilliant course and I’ve found the core principles of it invaluable. I’ve recommended you to a number of friends and colleagues in the short time since the course – testament to you and the advice provided.

What did you want from the course?
The ability to remain calm and composed when speaking publicly.

Did you get it?

Yes I did. The course allowed me to pinpoint and understand my key issues with public speaking which stems from being the centre of attention.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Nothing from my perspective

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
The Psychology particularly resonated with me. I didn’t want a slick powerpoint course – I wanted the nuts and bolts of public speaking and the baggage that comes with it. The eye contact exercises were one of the standout principles, something I have never worked on professionally or personally until now.

All the best
amie

Sometimes it’s a coaching session rather than a course…

Hi John,

Thank you for the consultation a few weeks ago, I just wanted to let you know that the ‘chat ’ went really well!
I felt confident speaking in front of 250 people and I had some nice feedback afterwards. The organisers want me to speak next year! Thank you for your advice and support
Kind Regards,
Alicia

Annie writes about a course in London

What did you want from the course?
I had an absolute phobia of public speaking and so I wanted to become more comfortable with public speaking and learn practical steps to improve my confidence in front of an audience.

Did you get it?
Yes, absolutely! The course exceeded my expectations and helped me feel more confident and comfortable in public settings.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Honestly, I can’t think of much to improve. The pacing was great and everything felt manageable.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I loved how John took us through the process step by step, making everything feel approachable. He’s not just a great teacher but also an inspiring person, not afraid of showing his own vulnerability and inner self.

Please feel free to add any other comments
I found the course so impactful that I’ve recommended it to my boyfriend, who’s signed up for the October session.

Mike writes about a two day course in Bristol
Dear John
Here is my feedback, but overall I just want to say thank you, I got so much out of those two days it is hard to actually summarise.

What did you want from the course?
I really wanted to get more comfortable with public speaking and improve the quality of my delivery, ideally moving towards effective storytelling. I am someone who throws myself out of my comfort zone regularly and always looks for opportunities to present to audiences live however I felt that I had got as far as I could through this method and there was a persistent feeling of not enjoying the experience or doing myself the credit in these situations that my preparation and content deserved.

Did you get it?
Yes absolutely and lots more. As I read in previous course feedback and from what you said on the course, what we learned applies to so many other areas. What we covered helped to give the feeling of time and calm which in turn allowed me to feel very comfortable standing up in front of the group. The progressive and iterative steps covered in the course are well refined and push you just enough out of your comfort zone without being overwhelming. The course allowed me break down my previous experiences and understand root causes for where and why I had previously not enjoyed public speaking.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
Room was perfect (or just used perfectly) and the overall Engineers house experience was really good.

Please feel free to add any other comments
On the drive home from the course I was reflecting on how I felt and the word that immediately came to mind was ‘liberated’. It may sound strange or even overdramatic, but I honestly drove home feeling like a weight had been lifted and that I had almost had 2 days of high-quality therapy. The course is progressive and well-structured and the way you build a mutually supportive environment amongst the students is truly wonderful and we were all genuinely rooting for each other

Dougie writes about a two day course he did in Manchester

I wanted to work on my feeling more comfortable being the centre of attention and my capability of giving a speech at me wedding. By the way, John, in simple monetary terms this must be the best value for money course I have ever been on.

Did you get it?
I got it 100% from the first introductions right through to the final talks.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I’m not sure I can think of anything, but if I do, I will come back to you.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I really like the way it flowed, taking you pretty quickly from one level to another without ever feeling it was too quick or anyone ever too far out of their depth.
I liked the way that we were all at different levels at the start, but all progressed to the finish line at a similar level.
I liked the way it made me feel, slightly challenged, but comfortable at the same time, like sitting round my dinner table at home.
I like the way I feel now, three days after the course, a tingle of excitement like I’m actually now at the start of the journey with a lifetime of self-learning to come.
I enjoyed the way the group was quickly forged into a team, people that I had not met before and may never meet again, but, I feel, have been part of a life changing moment for all of us.
I did not anticipate, the added benefits, a bit of inner calmness has replaced inner turmoil, a willingness to speak first, instead of hanging back until its “safe” or just to stand and be in a crowd, all benefits I didn’t know I needed.

Please feel free to add any other comments
I have been in managerial positions all my life and a company director for decades and suffered badly with anxiety for all those years, it was only wedding next year that has prompted me to take action, I’m not the type of person to say, I wish I had done this sooner, but I am so glad I have done this now. Thank you John for your leadership, thoughtfulness and great skill in getting us through this barrier.

Paul came on the same Manchester course in September

Hi John
It was a pleasure to meet you last week and I thoroughly enjoyed the course.

What did you want from the course?
My role involves mee often having to present, whether to external or internal stakeholders. Although I accept the challenge of doing this, I often put myself under undue pressure before the event and harshly critique myself following. I wanted to learn more about my fears and how to manage them to allow myself to be content with how I am.

Did you get it?
I did and a whole lot more! Rather than the course being framed around how to present, the fact it explored the (often irrational) feelings which go hand in hand with both public speaking and confidence in life in general really resonated with me and I could see how small changes each day could have such a large impact on this.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I can’t really think of anything.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I liked the fact that it wasn’t a ‘how to’ guide on how to carry out a presentation. As it was just a small group, the trust which was built from the first morning onwards, allowed an atmosphere of support to really open up about previous experiences and understand that this was quite normal. Having so many opportunities to carry out thew practical learnings kept myself and the rest of the group engaged throughout and I can honestly say that I was a bit gutted when it ended which I certainly couldn’t say for the majority of the numerous courses I’ve been on in my life!

Please feel free to add any other comments
John takes a genuine interest in his group and what has brought them to the sessions. There is absolutely no pressure to undertake any of the activities but with the support and encouragement of both John and the group, even the most anxious of participants would feel comfortable to do so. Like anything, you get out what you put in and the more that you use the experience to really question some of your previously held beliefs allows you to leave after the 2 days feeling like anything is possible.

Up until the moment I walked in on day one I had absolutely no idea what to expect. I have been on numerous courses on different subjects throughout the years and a part of me was already sabotaging the course thinking to myself ‘it won’t work’, ‘it will be a waste of time’. This disappeared by the first morning break when I could instantly tell it was different to any other course I had been on and we were all there for the same reasons with no judgements.

Short review from Andy who came on my Bristol course in September 2024

Thanks for much for a wonderful learning experience. It was not what I expected, but delivered so much more than I could have imagined! You are a fantastic coach, and I had a wonderful experience. It’s not just a public speaking course. It’s a whole approach to help manage anxiety and confidence. I’ll be recommending you to some other people, as I think you can genuinely change people’s lives!

August 2024

For me it’s really interesting to have another group facilitator’s feedback about the course as it helps me learn about my course in a different way. Here is Elaine’s take on a two day course in Bristol

Dear John,

Thank you so much for your kind words and for the opportunity to participate in the public speaking course.
It was an incredible experience, and I truly appreciated the energy and insights shared by everyone involved. Below are my responses to your feedback questions.

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to learn ways I could manage my anxiety when engaged in any presentation/speaking situations.

Did you get it?
Yes, I not only achieved my goal of learning new strategies to manage my anxiety but also gained a deeper understanding of the principles behind them. For instance, I learned the importance of taking my time and owning the stage before speaking, a practice that helped me ground myself and set a confident tone for the rest of the presentation. I also discovered the power of giving myself permission to pause, a technique that helps me manage my thoughts and keeps the audience engaged.

Understanding the psychological impact of these techniques was eye-opening. For instance, realising how these practices help manage the brain's fight, flight or freeze response was invaluable. It gave me insights into calming my nerves and maintaining a composed demeanour, which is crucial for effective public speaking. This deeper understanding has not only made me more confident in applying these strategies in various speaking scenarios but also has led to significant personal growth. I believe this is a testament to the effectiveness of the course and your facilitation.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I really can’t think of much to offer improvement. The course was delivered exceptionally well. As a workshop facilitator myself (and always super anxious at the beginning of every session—hence why I participated in this course), I really appreciated the balance of pace and detail. The pace was just right, allowing for in-depth discussions and personal reflections. When it was my turn to talk, I appreciated the time I was offered to express myself in detail.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I particularly enjoyed the collaborative atmosphere and the practical exercises, which helped us apply the concepts in real-time. The insights on ‘expecting blank faces’ and how to manage them through ‘wide visioning’, as well as confidence and handling public speaking nerves, were invaluable

Thank you once again for the opportunity, John. It was truly a privilege to work with you and the other participants
All the best,
Elaine

sometimes reviews are short and sweet…

Thanks again for a superb course, I honestly believe this, from a personal point of view, was one of the most inspiring courses I’ve attended.

James talks about a two day course in London

Hi John,
Thank you for running the course, what a great thing opportunity you are giving and your story behind it.  Best,
James

What did you want from the course?
To be more confident, find people I can relate to and understand why I am feeling anxious about presenting with the goal of being able to feel less anxious.

Did you get it?
Yes, it was absolutely perfect for me and beyond what I expected.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
A second course!

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I like how much John cared about the people there and the reason he was doing it. John created an informal, open and transparent environment created, which was a refreshing safe space vs being in the office

Please feel free to add any other comments
The course was a gamechanger for me. I found likeminded people who struggled with presenting, where previously I felt like I was the only one. (John comments - I pointed out on the course that I would have gone out of business long ago had that been the case! Anxiety makes us hyper self-focused and distorts our reality and makes it all about ME)
If you have any fear of public speaking then this course is an absolute must and I will highly recommend it.

July 2024

Jose came all the way from Spain for the course

Hi John,

It was a real pleasure to meet you and to learn so much from you and from the other course members. I am extremely happy I took that step and joined you in Manchester. Please find my feedback below:

What did you want from the course?
Public Speaking has always been a stumbling block in my career, and I have always tried to avoid the exposure it entails. My goal in joining this course was to feel more comfortable when speaking in front of an audience. I wanted to overcome the anxiety and fear I experienced when faced with public speaking.

Did you get it?
I definitely have a different perspective on public speaking after taking John's course. I have learned how to control my anxiety and no longer feel "small" in front of an audience. I have also gained greater confidence and now have the tools to overcome the great fear I once had.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I would have gladly had a 3rd day of course. A sort of reinforcement session, if it makes sense.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I really enjoyed the structure of the course. It feels like a journey where you work on various small steps, growing from one to the next almost without noticing. John organizes it all very well and with great sense.
The course allows you to build confidence and courage as the hours go by. Although the focus is on public speaking, it provides tools that help you excel in other aspects of life. By the end of the second day, you feel like a totally different person.

Please feel free to add any other comments.
I highly recommend this course to anyone struggling with public speaking and lacking confidence when facing an audience.

What made you choose to sign up to my course?
As I read through the course's website, I felt it suited my needs better than any other course. I appreciated how it focused more on building confidence in public speaking, rather than just on "practice, practice, practice."

Did you have any hesitations or concerns about signing up to this course? I hesitated because I live in Spain and joining the course required me to travel. I decided to have an initial coaching session with John and I was very pleased with the outcome. That initial conversation with John convinced me to join the 2-day course.

all the best Jose Luis Garcia Fernandez

Luke writes in detail about how the course has helped him, and how I got something wrong on the course for him and what the course was like for him.

Hi John,

Apologies for my delayed response. Truthfully, I wanted to give it a bit of time to see whether the message was long-lasting and had sunk in before I gave my feedback.

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to have the ability to publicly speak without fear or without feeling the pressure I associated with it. I wanted to not get up there a quivering mess, voice wobbly and temperature off the scale.

Did you get it?

Last week I had the opportunity to present at a work conference in Rome front of our company CEO (in charge of 8000+ people!) and ~ 45 people. I volunteered to do this. Whilst I had pre presentation nerves, I kept reinforcing the messages that you taught, including it is not a test, it is just a conversation, you are not being judged by the audience, only supported. I effectively unhooked from negative thoughts I was having and reinforced to myself that I had utterly nothing to worry about and that I was willing to put up with these nerves to better my career and talk about something I am good at and passionate about. This resulted in a very confident and assured presentation; I had no voice quiver, I spoke with a conversational tone, honing in on members of the audience and speaking directly to them. I even included humour effectively and I truly embraced the opportunity. People came up to me afterwards to say what a great job I did. One thing I have struggled in the past with is being the centre of attention. At multiple occasions at this conference I was the centre of attention but this was something I embraced and this led to me connecting with new people and developing great relationships with my colleagues. I now can’t wait for my wedding speech and I can honestly say I am looking forward to it. It sounds silly, but I find myself walking down the street whistling or singing to myself (I can’t say I’m quite a guerrilla singer yet!) which to me I would never thought I would do as I wouldn’t want any attention.

I can’t thank you enough for the techniques that you have taught me; they are universally applicable and I now use them in every day life to great effect.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I didn’t particularly agree about not giving peer feedback because other people may think they haven’t done a good job. Whilst I understood where you were coming from completely, in my opinion I think peer support and collaboration is a fantastic device. Compliments can be invaluable to bring confidence and raise self-esteem.  (Luke is right, if the feedback goes really well, it can be very helpful but over the years I’ve realised that the biggest change that people need to make is with themselves and sometimes people can be hurt by well intentioned feedback)

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I liked the size of the group, it was very effective as it was not overwhelming but not so small that you would not feel the benefit.
I liked how incremental the course was; it teaches you the basics and works on them to the point where you feel you have a solid foundation to build on. The groups are very supportive and this leads to a really collaborative environment.

As a teacher, you are patient and understanding. You completely take away the pressure and reinforce the collaborative environment of the course.

I like that the course makes you understand that I am valued and I am brilliant. That you need to embrace who you are and you truly have nothing to worry about. I like that it challenges your perception of other people’s perception of you.

What made you choose to sign up to my course?
Nerves related to my work conference presentation and wedding speech. It was a last resort for me before I went to see a medical professional as my public speaking anxiety was really out of control.

Did you have any hesitations or concerns about signing up to this course?
And if so, what got you over that?

I really wanted to maximise the most out of the course and I believe I did. I felt beforehand that the course might be too short for how much help I needed but in the end it covered a lot.

Sarah writes about a two day course

Hello John
Hope you’re well. Apologises for sending this to you later than what I hoped but hopefully this will help others to sign up to your wonderful course! It really has changed my way of thinking.
Best Wishes
Sarah

What did you want from the course?
To feel less anxious when public speaking.

Did you get it?
Yes and so much more. The course made me think about all aspects of public speaking and how to unhook the negative thoughts. I had also never thought about our ‘wonky brain’ and how much pressure that releases. I have thought about the course a lot since completing it and I’m getting so much better at just public being. No one has eaten me yet!

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I really don’t think there is anything. I enjoyed all aspects of the course and there was no pressure to do anything we didn’t want to.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
John’s sense of humour and vulnerability. He taught the course in a way that makes you feel so relaxed and not feel stupid for feeling nervous. Thank you, John, for showing your own vulnerability, you have such a gift and thank you for sharing it. John also displays his own teachings when chatting to us so we know they work!

Also, how John helps us think about why we are fearful and how our brain can work with us rather than against us.

Please feel free to add any other comments
I booked the course 3 weeks before it started and then spent the 3 weeks so anxious and wondering if I was brave enough to go. John makes you feel so at ease as soon as you walk through the door and the nerves just disappear. I only wish I had done this course years ago so if you are worried about it, please don’t be and know that you will come away with so much more.

Since the course I speak to people on my daily walk whereas before I would have looked at the ground or looked elsewhere. I have also spoken up in meetings since and used the tools you gave us to help with any nerves. My confidence has grown and now I assume support rather than worrying that people think the worst of me.

June 2024

Good morning John,

I'm so sorry for the late reply, this past week has been a whirlwind with work and the kittens!

I really enjoyed the course and feel it has helped me so much. Already I have spoken to more people than I would usually and have attended a works' celebration and went along knowing I didn't really know anyone. I didn't feel awkward at all and had the confidence to strike up a conversation with a stranger. I even joined in with a limbo and was the center of attention and it was great! I haven't had the opportunity to do any public speaking yet but now am able to look forward to this rather than dread it.

Did you get it?
I did. I liked that it wasn't a course on "how to give a good powerpoint presentation", it was about seeing public speaking differently, as a chat, not a performance; understanding the audience; learning to be more confident and be more comfortable in public "being".

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I can't think of any improvements. I thought it was great.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I liked how you and the group created such a supportive atmosphere. It was already challenging to practise standing up there, but knowing that everyone there was supportive really helped.

Also, the notes to take away so we can refresh ourselves on what we have learnt, I feel this will be valuable to have at hand when I next have a public speaking opportunity to remind myself what I have learnt.

Please feel free to add any other comments
I really enjoyed the course and was a little sad when it all came to an end on the second day! As mentioned above, I loved how it was more than a course on how to speak in public, it's a course on being comfortable with public being and confidence building which affects all areas of life. They go hand in hand so it's tackling the foundational issues so that public speaking itself is much easier. I'm excited to put what I've learnt into practice and see where my future will take me now this huge barrier has been lifted. Over the past few years, social anxiety had been getting in the way of my life, and I'd noticed it had been getting worse since working from home too as I didn't have a lot of opportunity to speak to people face to face. Now I can understand my audience better and can take control of my anxious feelings, I feel so much more confident and that nothing is holding me back. I am climbing out of my anxious hole into a brighter world of opportunity and possibilities.

Thinking back to your lead up to buying the course
What made you choose to sign up to my course?

On your website it says - "It’s NOT a course about how to structure a presentation. It’s different. It’s a public speaking course about the psychology of anxiety, confidence and public speaking for people who don’t like public speaking."

As I was finding myself in an anxious "hole" which was holding me back in work, I knew I needed to get a hold of my social anxiety and build my confidence back up so I could move forward with my career.

I want to thank you so much for helping me, for teaching me how to "be" in public. Now I feel I can move forward with my life and my career and not let my anxious mind hold me back any longer.

Kindest Regards,

Jess

Giusi writes about a two day course in London

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to learn how to disengage from anxiety and negative thoughts when speaking in public, as well as learning to accept my own way of speaking in public in an authentic way, by being myself and not perform in other people's ways

Did you get it?
Yes, I learned what I needed. “Public being” was a powerful lesson.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I think the course is well designed and paced.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
John connects with the audience in a very humble way and the course feels very authentic, respectful of people's different styles and times in delivering a public speech. All of us felt a positive shift at the end of the course.
The techniques we learned are very easy to put into practice and have a very positive impact on calming our nerves and boosting our confidence whilst unhooking from negative thoughts.

Please feel free to add any other comments
I learned so much from the "not seeking validation from the audience and assuming support".

Sam writes about a two day course in Bristol

Dear John,

I wanted to extend a huge thank you for the public speaking course. Participating in it not only boosted my confidence for my wedding day but has also positively impacted my wider life.

Regarding your questions:

1. Did you get it? - Absolutely, the course content really resonated with me and I found it excellent.

2. What could be improved? - There’s very little to suggest for improvement. Perhaps larger groups could be beneficial for practicing in front of more people, though the personal touch in the smaller settings was also greatly beneficial.

3. What did you like about the course and facilitation? - Your openness and the personal stories shared were both powerful and moving. Your willingness to display vulnerability in leading the course significantly enhanced my respect and engagement.

The concepts of the “wonky brain” really struck a chord with me, making the content relatable and invaluable.
Thanks once again for such a transformative experience.

All the best,
Sam

”I still don't know a proper adjective in English to describe it. I believe what I could to try to use to describe the experience is: "It was amazing and unblocking. IMO every software engineer should do John's course”

From a Google five star review
Very worthwhile. I'm an MD of a company and have always hated public speaking. John was able to break down the issues and get to the essence of where things could be going wrong. I'm looking forward to putting course learnings into action.

Ellie takes the confidence learnings not just for presenting but for her everyday life as well.
Hi John,
I really wanted to take the time to reflect on what I had learnt. To be honest, after the course finished, I felt a bit overwhelmed with the inner revelations I had. I will do my best to answer the questions below as well as I can because I THINK EVERYONE CAN GAIN SOMETHING FROM THIS COURSE. I’m so glad I stumbled upon it and very grateful for you holding such a positive safe space.

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to feel more confident in presenting at work.

Did you get it?
A whole lot more than that. The course changed how I view myself and others.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Nothing obvious springs to mind here other than the group I was in was potentially too big. (My group size was 10 people but this is the maximum - JD)

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I thought the course was well paced. The structure was a good balance of information, practise, and storytelling.

Please feel free to add any other comments
Following the course I have been making a real effort to listen to myself and be brave enough to be myself – without fear of others reactions. In doing so I’ve started journaling again and found this such a kind and gentle way to reconnect with myself. Thank you so much for holding space and being such a wonderful teacher!

What actions of confidence are you going to explore in the next two weeks?
Over the last few weeks I have been more aware of my surroundings and talking to people who I wouldn’t usually – like at the bus stop or when I was in a waiting room yesterday. I am actively trying not to apologies (when I don’t need to) and when I speak to people I don’t know very well I am assuming support and that they are genuinely interested in what I have to say. I’m taking up more space through the way dressing and having my curly hair down.

I hope through my answers you can see that I do really feel I gained a lot on a personal level from this course. I feel like this helped me more than some of my previous therapists! So THANK YOU. (It’s a lovely comment and I don’t see this work as therapy, we don’t delve into the past at all, I see it as helping people get new confidence skills for living our lives more fully! - JD)

With kind regards,
Ellie

John Robinson writes about a two day course in Manchester

What did you want from the course?

I wanted to be able to stand in front of people and speak in a way that allowed me to feel calm, and in control. I’m led to believe that I appear so when I’m engaging in public speaking, but I never feel that way.

Did you get it?
Absolutely, and more. What I THOUGHT I wanted was to be a different person when speaking in front of people. To be very measured, and slow paced, and kind of serious. What I came away having learned is that it is much better for me to just be myself – to feel comfortable in my own skin, accept what I’m like, and trust that others will accept that too.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Tricky. I would say more reps in front of people, but I think that it would be very difficult to get to that any quicker without cutting short the groundwork which makes the course so effective.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I especially thought the course fostered a great, supportive group environment. Most of all, John’s way of teaching the material strikes me as crucial to the course’s success. There is a degree to which he allows everyone to feel comfortable, because he himself shows us his vulnerabilities and feelings, which makes it okay for everyone else.

Just a big thank you, John, for a genuinely inspirational course.

David, a university lecturer, writes about a two day course

Hi John,

I want to say thank you so much for the incredible experience of doing your course last week. It was so great to meet you, and I’m so glad I came across your course, it was everything I was hoping for and more. I am actually looking forward to my next public speaking opportunity to put this into practice!

What did you want from the course?
I booked on to the course because I was looking for practical strategies and practices to manage public speaking anxiety and especially to better control the physical effects of that anxiety which I find very hard to manage. I had already talked with my line manage about my struggle with anxiety around public speaking, and when I showed her your course details, she was fully supportive and fully agreed this sounded like exactly what I needed.

Did you get it?
Yes, very much so, and a lot more besides!

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
For me, the course was exactly what I was looking for. I can’t think of anything I would change.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I most valued and appreciated your openness and honesty, the way you spoke from the heart and the passion you put into teaching the course. It was clear that more than anything, you want to help people, not just to speak in public and better control their anxiety, but to live the life they want to with courage and authenticity.

Please feel free to add any other comments
I found doing your course a very powerful experience – one which will stay with me. I have already been telling everyone about it and encouraging them to have a look and get booked on, because I believe that so many people would benefit from doing this

Claire writes about a two day course in Manchester and also about how she chose the course.

Hi John,
I can’t thank you enough for the shift in mindset you have triggered. I feel I’ve been given permission to shine. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Claire

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to better understand why, even the very mention of the words; ‘public speaking’, ‘presentations’, ‘to present’, filled me with complete dread, fear and the need to run away. I wanted to learn more about anxiety and why it has been holding me back in life so long. I also wanted to get out of my comfort zone and take some positive action towards addressing this deep-seated fear.

Did you get it?
Yes, and so much more! I feel this is the start of a new life for me. A new way of being because I have the tools now to challenge my thinking and self limiting beliefs.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
The size of group was perfect. The amount of participation was great. The right balance between listening/learning and putting things into practice. John is incredibly reassuring and supportive and provides the perfect environment to put people at ease.

What made you choose to sign up to my course?
Speaking to John before booking. Going through the course format beforehand to ensure it was exactly what I was looking for - getting to the root cause of anxiety and fear about public speaking. Rather than being about how to structure a presentation etc.

March 2024

An anonymous book author writes about her course in Bristol. Authors have a tough job, they spend years writing a book by themselves and then are expected to leave the safety of their writing den and stand in front of lots of people and promote their book!

What did you want from the course?
To be able to speak in front of audiences without terror.

Did you get it?
It no longer feels frightening. And if it does then I have the tools to manage that.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
John is a very idiosyncratic trainer, I don't think it would be possible to change too much without ruining the whole.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
Rather than offering glib tips on how to do public speaking, John really unpacked our fears without belittling them and helped us to reframe our thinking. John's openness about his own life, and his warmth, made it a very safe space which allowed us to explore our own difficulties and preconceptions in front of each other.

Please feel free to add any other comments
This was an unexpectedly enriching two days and it was a real privilege to be alongside the other participants. It had greater psychological insight than just into public speaking and might help with other difficulties of self-esteem.
I wasn't looking for a course about how to be slick, or build a presentation, I wanted to be able to cope with the anxiety, and with my tendency to, and terror of, going blank. I liked that it was an individual teaching it, not a company trainer, and that they were reaching out to individuals. I could see from the language (on the website) that it was directed at the areas I have trouble in.

Kasia writes about a two day course in Manchester in March
Hi John,
Thank you so much for everything last week! I was so impressed by how you created such a warm and supportive environment, even with a group of strangers. The course content felt directly applicable to my needs, and I've already started sharing it with others.

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to overcome the anxiety and to be able to control the overwhelming stress that comes with it.

Did you get it?
While completely eliminating anxiety might not be possible, I learned valuable techniques for managing it. I also realized the importance of self-compassion and letting go of perfectionism.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
No, it was perfect.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I appreciated the course setup, which made the learning experience engaging.

I would only add please have some green tea next time 😉 (lesson learnt! - JD)

Cat writes about a two day course in London
Hi John
Thank you again for a fantastic course. Here's my feedback...

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to get rid of the anxiety I have standing up in front of people (or doing this virtually) and speaking.

Did you get it?
Yes but in a different way from what I imagined - and so much more besides. I learnt about public being not just public speaking. That it's ok to feel uncomfortable - that doesn't need to stop me. Beyond the comfort zone is where the interesting things are.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I can't think of anything. It's really shows that you've facilitated this course for many years and honed your approach.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
There are so many things I liked about this course and the way it was facilitated.
It went way beyond public speaking and really addressed some fundamental issues/learnt beliefs that I have/had. For this reason, it was emotionally challenging but that's what I wanted/needed.
I really liked the way the learning built up in a manageable way. It was so well structured and the pace was great.
The stories you shared about your experiences and other people's experiences really helped bring things to life.
I was amazed how all the group were prepared to be vulnerable, learn and grow together. I'm sure that's not an easy thing to achieve.

What was also really helpful was the info on the website - I knew it wouldn't be 'how to write a great PowerPoint' or 'how to project' but more about the psychology. Loved that there were so many reviews. Many of these resonated with me.

Hannah writes about the same course in London
What did you want from the course? I came on the course to improve my public speaking in general and lessen the fear / anxiety of it.

Did you get it? I did, and much more. I have come away with multiple techniques to disengage the anxiety and to be more confident when standing in front of an audience by controlling my thoughts. I have also come away realising that a lot of anxiety is linked to confidence and how to work on practising confidence.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation? I couldn’t fault the course.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
This course was so much more than just about public speaking. I loved that the environment created was very quickly made into a safe space and there was a great focus on encouragement with no judgement – I really felt this for the whole 2 days. I really liked how John created a step by step way forward, breaking things down and gradually building up the speaking. If someone told me at the start of the course where I would be at the end I wouldn’t have thought it was possible in only 2 days.

Tim writes a quick note about the Manchester course

Hi John

I wanted to thank you again for the excellent course over the past 2 days. Whilst I definitely found it challenging and outside my comfort zone, that was why I was there!
It was lovely to grab a drink afterwards with a few of the other attendees and decompress, and I honestly felt humble to have met a group of like minded people and to be let into their world and share their fears. That alone was worth coming to the course for.
My immediate thoughts are it has given me a renewed enthusiasm for talking to be people, I’ve done this a few times already, when usually I would have just said nothing, but it felt great.
For too long I’ve been seeking a comfortable life, free from the unexpected that a random conversation or people situation could take me in, but in doing this I’ve created an uncomfortable life when I need to engage in these public speaking situations.

Thanks again John, you are an exceptional trainer to work with

It was such a pleasure to attend your course last week, I've been waiting to give feedback as I had a couple of meetings and presentations this week that I would normally really struggle with but wow, what a difference! I actually enjoyed the 'chat' I gave yesterday to 150 people. It was virtual and I may have felt more anxious if it was in person, but I was actually excited about it and loved every second of it. The high I felt after doing it was far greater than the feeling of fear I've previously felt. I'm so grateful for what you taught me and I've shared the details of the course with so many colleagues. After a really tough 2023 I feel like I've had such a confident boost, something that I was in desperate need for. Thank you!

Hi John,
Thank you so much for the course. Wow, so much to unpick, to work on, to practise. It's been great to have a few days to digest all the information and techniques. I keep noticing myself coming back to "unhooking thoughts," thinking about "willingness" and "purpose," and immediately feeling more positive and open.

What did you want from the course?
Techniques to deal with anxiety, work on confidence and get more comfortable being in front of people.

Did you get it?
I've got it and more! There's been a huge shift in how I feel towards being the centre of attention. Before I would often shy away from stories, or trail off at the end rushing because I thought people were bored. Now I'm learning to hold that space, enjoy being there, and engaging with people in different ways - Eye contact, and pauses!

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I wonder if you could introduce more case studies at the beginning of how people have overcome fears / phobias of public speaking (i.e. Barak Obama example) - to make it feel more possible from the get-go.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I really loved how you structured the course. It was nice working up towards speaking in front of people day-by-day. I thought the eye-contact exercises worked really well. The last day was very emotional for me for some reason, I think it was because you made the space feel so comfortable & open.

Please feel free to add any other comments
Overall, your course has pushed me to start my confidence journey! I'd recommend it to anyone who feels any anxiety towards being the centre of attention. I'm now equipped with life skills, and I feel so excited to finally feel like it's possible to feel comfortable talking in front of people. Thank you so much John, you've helped me so so much!

Helen Bellis writes about my January Manchester course
What did you want from the course?

I wanted to find ways to help me with my overwhelming anxiety around public speaking and what has been a complete block and something I’d struggled to talk about or admit for 25 years.

Did you get it?
Yes!! The block has been eased and the shame I put on it reduced massively. I spoke about my fears and the way I felt and even that was a huge thing for me. I feel like the course has helped me with my fear of speaking in general (in meetings and conversations) and that I might be able, in time, public speak more. I spoke on the course, stood up in front of 10 people, for the first time in 25 years and spoke for a couple of minutes more than once. I can’t believe it! I can now no longer say that I haven’t done that for so long. Even if that’s all I ever manage to do again, the fact is, I did it.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Nothing. We all wanted more sessions!

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I liked that it was broken down into small steps and exercises. That it wasn’t just about how to speak but more about how we feel. I liked the fact I had choices and that helped me grow in confidence to keep building how much of a task I did.

Please feel free to add any other comments
I honestly feel like it’s the best course I’ve ever been on and I wish I’d done it sooner. I met the most wonderful group of people and am surprised by how much I got out of it and how useful I found the strategies to be able to stand up and talk.

November 2023

Gemma is surprised to find out that her perception of pubic speaking can change!
Here she is talking about her two day course in Manchester

What did you want from the course?
To build confidence around public speaking, and learn skills to help manage nerves/ anxieties.

Did you get it?
Yes, I left with an understanding of why I (used to) dread public speaking, and learned much more than I expected.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Nothing

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I didn’t know what to expect from the course, John made me feel welcome and at ease. He helped me to feel like part of the group, and normalised and validated my feelings. The delivery was great, and I think the gradual pace works well over two days, to build confidence. By the end, I forgot I was “public speaking” and felt like I was just “speaking” .

Please feel free to add any other comments
I learned so much about myself over the 2 days, thank you for creating an environment that was safe for me laugh and cry. I never believed my perception of public speaking could be changed, it was helpful for me to learn to assume support, and that (Self) kindness really does go a long way. A truly wonderful and empowering course, thank you.

Emily gets a surprise in Manchester!

Hi John!
I did not think for a second before signing up for your course that I would be stood up and speaking in front of a room full of people I’ve never met WITHOUT crying! By the end of day two I was able to stand up and speak without even a quiver in my bones or a thought in my brain what I was even going to say when I got up – something I could never imagine myself doing, ever. The aspects of the course I found most helpful was understanding the audience (a perspective I had not considered before – I can’t believe I didn’t think everyone might NOT be judging and scrutinising everything I do, crazy!), and practicing unhooking spiralling negative thoughts and feelings.

Your course has taught me a lot, and not just in terms public speaking but for feeling more confident in myself. It is ok for me to just BE here!

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to gain confidence to deliver meetings in the workplace

Did you get it?
I got so much more! I feel the material you delivered during the two days wasn’t just applicable to public speaking but also relevant to gaining confidence in myself, and will help me throughout my life if I keep practicing.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I was really happy with everything

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I really appreciated how friendly, kind, open, and honest you were with us. Establishing the course as a safe space from the beginning meant a lot to me, I was able to be vulnerable when I was most scared (publicly speaking) – I’ve never felt so safe in a room full of strangers! Also, really nice of you to provide snacks during breaks – thank you!

Quick one from Robert
Sorry for the delay here John, I thoroughly enjoyed it and found the course very interesting, informative, and useful.
I also really enjoyed meeting up with the other people on the course, some of whom were completely transformed by the end of day 2. From where we were on Thursday morning to the Friday afternoon, it was truly incredible – and testament to your methodology and approach to what can be a hugely stressful ordeal for a lot of people.
All the best and take care.

Chris writes to me about a two day course in London

Hi John,
Many thanks for your email and the kind words, means a lot. Thank you also for everything we went through this week, these were issues that I've been struggling with for the majority of my life, so really appreciate the sessions and your help in starting my journey ahead.

What did you want from the course?
I have had a profound phobia of public speaking for as long as I can remember, certainly since University which has then progressed throughout the entirety of my working career. I wanted to learn new ways to rethink public speaking and overcome these nerves, which have plagued me for so long. I was keen to learn techniques, ways of thinking and be provided with the tools to help me with this.

Did you get it?
Definitely - as mentioned, on the way to the course on the first day, I almost turned back and went home as I was so nervous about what lied ahead.
I'm so glad that I didn't! I told myself, that running and avoiding facing these issues was just causing them to fester even more and I was fed up of just running for the rest of my life, it was time to finally take action. The course was excellent at helping me overcome these psychological barriers and make me frame the thought of public speaking, or public 'being' completely differently which has been hugely beneficial to me. It doesn't just stop with the aspect of public speaking either, it is about the general improvement in confidence in most aspects of my life which has now been transformed.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Can't really think of anything in particular that I'd improve about the course or facilitation.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
Thought the course was excellent, liked the way it was setup like an 'audience' with lots of practical opportunities, all really good and beneficial at putting yourself in real life scenarios and preparing for that. I got a lot from the blank face exercises and the importance of eye contact, etc and in general the tips & techniques to focus on when public speaking. Thought John was excellent throughout, really liked the immersive experience, the fact we weren't just staring at a screen and lots of opportunity to discuss, feedback, debrief and ask questions. Thought the course was structured excellently and wouldn't have it any other way.

Ingela writes about a two day course in London in September
Apologies my feedback is a little late but I wanted to put everything I learned to the test so I could give you an honest review

What did you want from the course?
I signed up to this course with the intention of becoming more confident when speaking in front of an audience.

Did you get it?
ABSOLUTELY!!!!
(After the course) On the 17th and 18th October, I had 2 days where I was expected to stand and speak in front of an audience. I have been in this position before and normally an hour before i'm expected to present I would get incredibly nervous and anxious which would leave me rambling and losing my train of thought. After attending this course I did not hesitate at all when it was my turn to speak. And I received a lot of positive feedback from the senior management team such as: 'you're different, something about you has changed', 'I was told how well you did yesterday, well done' 'You explained everything so well I don't have any further questions'

Karen doesn’t get what she wanted from a course in Bristol…..

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to erase the nerves that caused me to either procrastinate or over prepare forever. (The trouble is that anxiety is part of us, there is nothing wrong with you if you have anxiety, we need anxiety if you are in a real dangerous situation, you are not broken as a human. I know anxiety can be overwhelming, but we really need to develop NEW skills to have a different relationship to it and that’s what happened to Karen below)

Did you get it?
I’ve got something else, from the course that I didn’t expect. Due to your gentle exercises, I had practice sitting with the discomfort, facing it and realising that by doing this eventually it went away, not only that, but the more I sat with it, the quicker it went, and the less my fear of talking in front of people became.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I can’t suggest any improvements it was paced perfectly for me.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
Gentle, friendly and so supportive. All of us were from so many different walks of life and so many of us felt the same which was so reassuring. I loved seeing the perspective of the audience from the front of being blank faces even though we all think we are looking engaged and interested.
John’s wealth of stories illustrated things beautifully. His feedback was useful, spot on and always given gently and the group were all so supportive we felt like we had made friends at the end.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart John. It was such a good course and I’ve done a lot of courses in my life.

September 2023

Sometimes I really hesitate to put feedback in that is too good because it sounds way too much. I guess it’s a lovely problem to have! Unlike Abdul, I don’t think my course is world beating because how would anyone know that? And to be honest, running courses is not a competitive practice, thank goodness! What i do know is that I’m really lucky to run the same course all the time so it can improve as I learn more. It’s as simple as that, and caring about the outcome of each course. So here is Abdul’s very kind take on my course

Hi John
First and foremost I found the course delivered with great compassionate , empathy and humanity that uplifted the course from "just being another course" to something that felt more like a spiritual experience. It was a well thought and balanced approach addressing all negative things we keep inside our heads that prevent us from "taking our own little place in the world"
I could feel a shift in the way i perceived the physical world around me and I felt more at ease with my surroundings . The train journey back was much more pleasant than i could ever recall because i was so relaxed and at ease with myself for first time in a long time.

What did i want from this course ?
I wanted to confront my inner advisor over anxiety and fear that really wasnt real .
I believe I’m winning on that front now .

What could be improved about course ?
Not much..
Format and exercises are right and not too demanding or stressful...

What did I like about course?
I felt you bought a dimension to the course that only comes with devotion and deep analysis. i have been on many business courses in my time and this was an unreal uplifting experience that money can’t buy. I found other highly marketed and slick looking sites that looked more like commercials and thought that those didn’t fulfil my brief. Your site however looked more honest and in tune with the world we live in

Finally I would like to thank you John for producing and presenting what in my opinion is a world-beating and leading course that will continue to benefit and enlighten all those souls who gave up on life But had good fortune to bump into your course and then take huge step forward in their lives and "tick off" all those "to Do" things on their lists.

It was a privilige and honour to take part and meet you John and wish you continue to change the lives of those who thought they were too far gone .
Many thanks
Abdul

The course completely surpassed my expectations, it's changed my life.

Alice came on my Manchester course a few months ago and sent this in August
What did you want from the course?
I wanted to be able to deliver a presentation to colleagues at work without turning red, crying and running away. My last presentation in person was at university, I ran out the room in floods of tears. I didn't pass that module and the experience knocked my already low confidence.

Did you get it?
This and more! The course completely surpassed my expectations, it's changed my life. I came out of the course with a new found confidence and have noticed the difference in my personal and work life.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Nothing at all, John was a fantastic teacher. I've been recommending this programme to everyone I know who struggles with finding the confidence to speak in front of others.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I liked his focus on just being yourself and being ok with being uncomfortable sometimes. This course isn't one of those corporate training courses where someone in a suit shouts 'motivational messages' at you, telling you, you can be better if you just try harder. John's style of teaching really suited me. He came across as genuinely wanting to help others. He is an empathetic, engaging, funny and extremely knowledgeable teacher.

Please feel free to add any other comments
I'll never forget this course, it has helped me more than I could imagine.

My first in person presentation since the disastrous one at university, was delivering training to Admissions colleagues in the lead up to A-Level results day. I could feel my palms sweating and shaking. I was scared but I put what John had taught into practice and I did it! I cracked jokes, I gave members of the audience eye contact, I spoke clearly and not at a rushed place, it went well! One of my former colleagues who is a man who rarely gives praise, came up to me and said 'good speaking, you sounded like a proper grown up. You should be proud'. I nearly cried - tears of happiness this time.

After the course, I rekindled my passion for art and have signed up to attend an art session next week. I lost the confidence for creating art a long time ago especially drawing in front of others! All thanks to John I have the confidence to do this now.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
John was brilliant and so genuine. It is easy to tell how much he actually cares about making people feel better about public speaking. I walked up the stairs to the course on the first day feeling so nervous, and everything in John's words and delivery immediately dissolved those feelings. It made me feel, very quickly, that public speaking is not something to be terrified of and that it is possible to just be yourself when speaking to other people. All of the exercises were very thoughtfully structured and they all chipped away at the horrible dread feeling that accompanies public speaking for me. About three months down the line, I've thought of the course most days since .

Vicky writes about a two day course in Manchester

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to calm my inner voice, become more confident in delivering to audiences, learn new skills and improve in general on public speaking skills.

Did you get it?
Yes I really connected with the content. It was really refreshing to understand about the audience blank face and to stop thinking about the audience in a way that was personal to me- assume support was a great tactic. I really like the neuroscience element it made complete sense to me. I have knowledge in this area and actually accepting nerves and trying to calm yourself knowing that most people don’t even know your feeling that way was enlightening!

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
There wasn’t anything I didn’t enjoy. Even the exercises, they really made sense and fitted in with content.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
John you’re fantastic! I think your delivery and style is spot on. You create space for people to make connections but not too much that we chat and over run. I like the relaxed element of the structure and the honesty in your delivery. I am pinching your ‘ What do you think about this - good or a load of rubbish!’ Invites the audience to feedback in a direct but relaxed way.

You made me question myself in a positive way and gently challenged people and myself to think deeper about their own internal thoughts of why they present or think in certain ways. I love the flip chart it’s great and the prep you did before. I think your passionate and emotional in the right places. I would definitely do something of yours again.

Thanks for the fantastic experience. I truly feel excited - dare I say- for the next time I have the opportunity to speak publicly. I gained skills from the course that I will never forget and skills that I believe will transform my delivery of really important and emotive issues. To just be with one person at time, even if the audience is of 200 people. Once again thank you for the course, keep doing it, you really make a difference to peoples lives. I really felt I grew in the 2 days. I shared really personal stuff that I wouldn’t normally feel confident enough to do and I have done some training in the past, so creating a safe space is no easy task, with a group of strangers.

Dear John
I had an open mind going into the course. From what I had researched I was aware that it was going to be different and not just about public speaking.. It was an exceptional course that taught me life skills that will enable me to handle situations that I would normally shy away from. These skills just happen to also help you get over the fear of public speaking too. (that is the main focus of the course I promise - John)
The improvement in confidence and attitude shown by all the course participants between day one and day two, was vast. John, I would really like to thank you so much for your help and guidance throughout. It was a superb course and a huge pleasure to meet you and to benefit from your passion for helping people. You have definitely helped me for sure!
Best wishes,
Mark

Dan Jones writes about a two day course in Bristol.

Hi John,
Thanks for delivering such a valuable and enjoyable course; I should have attended this years ago.

What did you want from the course?
To better understand why I still felt anxious after all these years of public speaking, I wanted to develop skills to overcome my pointless anxiety and reset with a newly found confidence that I could utilise at work and in life.

Did you get it?
Yes, although I still need to test it out fully.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Difficult question; the course was excellent on the whole. If I had to be super critical, the delivery could have been more seamless occasionally. Still, as you shared, you were implementing new ways of working, and therefore I am confident that you will have this down by the time you deliver the content during your next workshop. You were still brilliant and handled the minor errors with ease. The content itself and structure was the critical part which you nailed. (I’m still learning about public speaking and testing things out to see if the course can be better, so things are not always seamless and I think that is probably okay!)

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
There wasn't anything I disliked; it was superb, as it got to the heart of what stands in the way of public speaking. It was amazing to hear other people's stories, witness their emotions, the diversity and connect with everyone, so thank you for facilitating that.

I will never forget those two days, for multiple positive reasons. Lunch was pretty good too. 😉

Sometimes a public speaking course becomes something deeper, Sam writes about her experience of coming on a two day course. My work isn’t therapy in the sense of diving deep into people’s past hurts or traumas. Of course I respect that history but it’s really just about how we can change where we are now and learn some new skills to build confidence. If someone just read this out at my funeral, this would be enough to show that I have done the job that I was meant to do

What did you want from the course?
To reduce my nervousness

Did you get it?
Yes

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Nothing

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
John brings a fantastic story-telling quality to this course. This, together with the supportive atmosphere, reminded me of being at primary school when everything was joyful and a bit magical. I enjoyed Johns sense of humour. I wasn’t expecting to have a laugh too!

Please feel free to add any other comments:
This course shifted more for me, even after Day 1, than a whole year of talking therapy.
Several years ago I’d stopped being who I really am. I can see now that I was overly comparing myself to others and where I ‘should’ be in life and this made me afraid of everything. I thought I just had to accept this awkward person I had become.

I was silently kicking and screaming going in on that first day, but as soon as I met John and the other group members I felt much better. I made a decision to allow myself to go with the process even though I felt my anxiety was so visible (it wasn’t by the way, anxiety makes us overly judge ourselves). I really think this helped me to get the best out of it even though I found it challenging at first.

When I got home after completing the course I had a cathartic crying session because of how much I’d achieved. I talked to my children - who are older teens - and told them about how I felt, which I think was important. I’ve been able to listen to music and feel light and happy, something I didn’t know I hadn’t experienced for a long time.

I used to psych myself up before meeting new clients, but I’ve already spoken to a couple with much more ease. It was so great to be able to do that. I’d thought I had to follow a rule book on ‘how to be a Proper Person’ but I can finally let that go.

John and the group helped me to experience self-acceptance - I feel that life is worth living again.

Dan writes a quick lovely letter after the two day course in Bristol

Dear John
Im already noticing a real difference in how I am processing my inner critic. Im being kinder to myself which is a huge win and breaking a pattern years in the making.
The course was not even close to how I thought it would be (in a good way). I got so much more out of it than I thought I would. You are facilitating & providing a safe space to allow people to explore themselves in an open and honest way, a really fulfilling experience for all involved. You must be proud of the work you do. You should be, you have a gift John! Hold on to it with both hands.
Kind regards,
Dan

Simon writes about a two day course in Manchester

What did you want from the course?
To improve my confidence in speaking in work situations, being comfortable to express my views in meetings and presentations.

Did you get it?
I very much enjoyed the course, as I mentioned to you on the day, it far exceeded my expectations as I hoped to improve my confidence in speaking but it has also improved my confidence in work and life!

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
The pace felt a little slow on the first day and a little rushed on the second day. The notes are good but are more a set of articles, it might be good to put them together into one document that follows the structure of things as discussed in the course.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I very much enjoyed the course content, and practical opportunities to practice our skills.

Please feel free to add any other comments
The course was an amazing experience, it genuinely felt life changing.
After the course, I attended a trade show the following week and really enjoyed speaking to people and had gained the confidence to go up to people and chat to them and introduce myself, something which I would have hesitated before. I’ve taken onboard the idea of practicing in public by speaking with strangers and have had several great interactions. I ended up stuck at Euston station for a few hours and struck up a conversation with a stranger (something I wouldn’t normally do), we ended up speaking for 2 and a half hours!

Quick review from Gavin who came on a two day course in Bristol
When learning anything new, you hope that your teacher has the knowledge, enthusiasm and flexibility to offer an engaging learning experience. John has all three in spades. Highly recommended.

Rachel writes about a two day course in Bristol

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to understand better why I was getting extremely anxious when presenting to large groups in public and to learn to manage the panic attacks. I also wanted to be more human in my presentation and able to share more of my self

Did you get it?
Yes – the practical exercises really helped me manage my anxiety levels and get used to being uncomfortable but not overwhelmed by it – I was able to relax more in my presentation and therefore be more present - still needs practice but I think I won’t avoid situations where I need to present to larger groups in the future

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I struggled a bit with sitting down all the time in what was quite a small room – it might have been good to be able to move about more over the 2 days.
(she’s right and I need to re-think it)

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
The pace was good - challenging but also very supportive and the initial 1:1 work helped build a supportive group and a safe space.
I wanted a course that explored the psychology of a fear of presenting rather than just techniques in presentation skills and this delivered as well as building transferable confidence. The small group was welcome and helped build rapport quickly – amazing to see how good people were at the end - everyone was inspiring in their journey.

Will writes about a course which wasn’t the easiest one for me to teach…

Hi John,
Apologies for the late reply, I really have been meaning to reply as I haven't stopped thinking about the course! It really is one of the best things I have done in my life, it was such a profound and powerful experience and one I am so grateful for and so grateful for you sharing your knowledge and experience with the world.

I'll answer the questions below but I really want to emphasise how much you taught me. The skills you taught me were really useful, but the most powerful moment and most profound takeaway from the course for me was seeing how you reacted to the uncertainty of the missed call from your brother. The way you taught us detachment then spent the afternoon practicing it in the hardest circumstances was the best way you could have taught, and that had a huge impact on me and it's something I'll never forget.
(My Aunt who I was very fond of died during the course and I found out by an error, the missed phone call was the signal that she had died, and I had to teach at the same time! So that’s what Will is talking about)

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to become more confident in myself, to be able to speak about something that I was not 100% on, but speak with confidence in front of an audience - either work or friends.

Did you get it?
I did - I learnt so much in being able to trust the stillness in between words and trust that the correct word will come, by just being present and trusting myself and my audience, it took away the pressure I put on myself.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I honestly wouldn't change a thing.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I loved the progression, the various stages, and sharing it with the others on the course. The way everyone opened up on the 2nd day was a wonderful experience. It really shows the beauty of life and what life is all about - those precious moments with other humans.

Please feel free to add any other comments
As I said above, I have learnt so much in the detail of the course, but so much more from you and the way you practiced what you preached.

May 2023

Unusually Julia sends her feedback 5 months after the course. But you can see the difference it’s made to her speaking and to her life and family.

What did you want from the course?
I wanted a magic wand to make everything alright and my anxiety to disappear immediately, and what I got was almost that. There was a bit of input from me, practising and trying something small and new each day/time I had a presentation. But what the course did do was make me feel that I'm not alone, by us all verbalizing our deepest fears which we all had and pretty much normalising them.

Did you get it?
Yes I totally got it, I had been on other styles of courses for presenting and they were detrimental, this course however was a gamechanger for me.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Nothing - it worked for me in all aspects

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
The size of the class and mix of ages.
The venue was perfect.
The content was interesting and allowed us enough time to practice and be brave.

The course consisted of many layers, it wasn't a 2 dimensional course that told us what to do, it went deeper than that and allowed us to be the authentic version of ourselves which in turn made presenting far easier.

Having done the course a while a go I can look back and see the difference it has made to me.
I no longer stress for weeks on end before a presentation, I trust myself to know my content, I no longer have notes and dare I say it but I am starting to see a sliver of enjoyment to presenting, I am by no means jumping up and down for joy but I am enjoying sharing my knowledge.
I now try to improve by a small amount each time I have a presentation and make small changes or tweaks to improve.
I am not scared of making mistakes, pausing or being just human up there in front of everyone, and believe everyone in the audience wants me to do a good job, because no one has told me otherwise yet 🙂
Over the past 3-4 months I can feel my confidence growing, I am no longer afraid to speak up in meetings, I challenge myself as well as others and I'm enjoying myself more. I am not as stressed out and best of all I'm kinder to myself and my family.
Kind regards,
Julia

Mehdi writes about a two day course

Dear John
Thanks for this amazing course that you gave us, it is still resonating inside of me and I really feel more at ease when the thought of talking arises. See below my comments.
Many thanks Sir,
Mehdi

What did you want from the course?
I only came to feel better at public speaking, and I left with that but also with being at ease with public being.

Did you get it?
Yes I did, all of it, I was like a sponge during the course and I really now feel empowered. Taking my place in the world is having a huge impact on me where I find myself not caring so much about what other people think.. at work or outside of work, which is the whole point of feeling more at ease and better in my own skin.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I can't find any negative, I guess your 23 years of experience has helped you shape the perfect course.
Maybe one thing, improve your handwriting;; ahahh. Not sure if it's because I am french but I did struggle to read your handwriting a bit. (He is right, I need to improve it)

What did you like about the course/facilitation?

  • I like that we were asked to talk within the first 2 hours of the course, that really helped jumping in the deep end and getting comfortable with one another. The 2 days are just enough to boost one's confidence.

  • I like that you asked us for our feedback after every exercise, this also helped us to public speak which adds to the training.

  • I liked the step by step approach and breaking things down to debunk the highly anxiety provoking activity of public speaking.

  • The facility was great, close to the shops which helped a lot.

Please feel free to add any other comments -
Just a note for anxious speakers wanting to cancel the course the day before (if you decide to share it..) ((I did!))
"If you are sitting at home the day before the course and the thought of not going to the course comes, which did occur to me. Make sure that you are going! John will put you at ease, and his step by step approach will make you very comfortable, and dare I say it, you will want to get up and speak. So don't listen to your nerves, set up your alarm and go, you will not regret it."

Jennie writes that she really, really enjoyed her course and this is her feedback on a Manchester course

What did you want from the course?
Confidence and to try to quash the fear of standing in front of people and speaking.

Did you get it?
YES!! And more.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Nothing – it was brilliant – the approach was amazing and something I had really not considered at all, just looking at things from a different angle really makes a difference and the lack of PowerPoint was appreciated 😊

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
Everything – the course completely matched my learning style and it was beautiful to watch some other people who were on the course flourish and grow.

Please feel free to add any other comments
The course was superb and absolutely not what I expected (expected to be given a brief to write a PowerPoint on and then have to present). The way you approached speaking and the audience - you led us all down a path that we weren’t expecting but your way worked for everyone in the room!

Renay talks about a two day course

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to face up to - and hopefully understand - the uncomfortable feelings I experience in social situations and when speaking in public.

Did you get it?
Yes, very much so.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Nothing.

The location was great. We achieved a massive amount in the two days, but at a consistent pace that remained enjoyable throughout. And the facilitation was excellent - couldn't have been better.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
This is not a typical course. It is tailored to each individual's requirements, which is only possible because the class size is small and because John is such a skilled and experienced teacher. We all had different issues, but everyone improved and learned something valuable.

Please feel free to add any other comments
I've been working at improving my social anxiety for many years now and the remaining issues I struggle with are not the usual ones. I can actually appear quite confident (overbearing, even) in social situations or when I am forced to speak in public, but the inner reality is very different.
I force myself to act in an extrovert and confident way even though I am neither of these things. This leads me to feel ashamed and embarrassed because I'm not being myself. And therefore I withdraw and hide away until I gather enough energy to go through the whole cycle again.
John's course gave me the opportunity to go through this cycle over and over again, using many small scenarios and in a very supportive environment. When you're working with other people who have similar issues it gives you the confidence to be honest about your experiences and to try things that you find uncomfortable. And by doing so you gradually learn and chip away at the problems.
I don't think there are many people offering this kind of guidance and this quality or teaching. If you get the opportunity to do this course - do it! You won't regret it. I can already feel life opening up a bit as I become my real self when I talk to other people, and I'm starting to get out into the world a bit more. Life doesn't seem so scary, and a lot more enjoyable.

Sam writes another quick note about how things are going so far after the course
John, I found the course hugely beneficial - thank you. It's answered some long standing issues that have escalated in my mind over the years. I now feel confident, day to day, and have already committed to public speaking in the future that historically I would have avoided at all costs.
I've benefited from the course from day one. I can hear a confidence in my voice, I'm not over analysing conversations and I haven't swerved public facing situations.  I would 100% recommend this course.
All the very best
Sam

When I think of this course, I think of two words ……. Life-changing.

March 2023

A Business Psychologist writes about a two day course in London

What did you want from the course?
To learn about public speaking, the skills and techniques that are used and I did not know about. I like to speak publicly but every time I would do it  I would get anxious so  I can say that I have also wanted to learn how to overcome my anxiety by practicing public speaking in a small environment with individuals that shared the same difficulties like me.

Did you get it?
I got from the course everything I wanted and more. I came out with a real zest for life, wanting to no longer try to impress anyone, willing to accept that I am vulnerable like all others, that I will make mistakes and that will be ok, that is ok not to know, that nobody is perfect and that perfection is not what I should aim for. I will always remember about blank faces as listening faces and that public speaking is just a chat with every member of the audience.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I can't think of anything as such. However, I would attend a follow up course if this would enable me to further improve my skills. I also believe that we could continue to develop the skills gathered if members of the group we have worked in would have liked to keep in touch via Teams/Zoom to continue the conversation, encouragement, share of experiences.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I liked the psychology of it, its structure, the way you have delivered it, that you were very down to earth and let us see your vulnerability too. I felt so comfortable as it I have known you for years !!!

Please feel free to add any other comments
Thank you very much for being such an amazing human being, your course has changed my life. I will never see public speaking so frightening again due to your course. Please carry on your amazing work so that other people feel confident to be themselves with their strengths and vulnerabilities and to allow themselves to be seen and to dare take their place in the world.

Victoria writes about a two day course in London

What did you want from the course?  A better understanding of why I fear public speaking, different approaches/techniques to dealing with nervous/overcoming the dread of public speaking

Did you get it?
Yes, I gained a better and deeper understanding of myself and why I feel so anxious speaking in large groups or in front of/to a large audience. I definitely learned new tools to try to help me with my anxious thoughts and nervousness. I liked learning about the idea of blank faces and how to deal with them, it was something I suppose I was somewhat aware of but subconsciously and without really having a better understanding of it. The tasks/practice we did was really useful and allowed me to test out what it feels like to take more pauses, deeper breaths, etc and its differences and I am much more aware of it now.  I also really liked learning about the practice of unhooking as I have a very anxious brain and overthink nearly every interaction, so practicing unhooking and acknowledging those thoughts but not overthinking is something I need to practice.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation? Not sure, not much I could think of really. I don’t think it’s the “traditional” public speaking course people seek especially if people are mostly concerned about public speaking and its importance in business/work environments, but there were so many useful and valuable elements of the course applicable to all aspects of life. I liked the facilities, my only comment is I’m not sure how accessible it is to people with accessibility needs as I’m not sure if there was a lift? (there isn’t and I need to think about access more)

What did you like about the course/facilitation? This course was incredible, and I think life changing. I really loved the holistic approach, the non-traditional approach to public speaking (or maybe it was traditional? I’ve never been on a public speaking course before so this is purely based off what I read when I was researching courses). I loved how safe the space felt, the “theory” and practicalities. It really challenged me and made me step out of my comfort zone. I feel like I developed a better understanding of myself and some of my thoughts. I felt very lucky and thought the group was great, made me wonder if the dynamics are always this good in these courses? It was reassuring in some ways to hear how other people felt and that I wasn’t alone in sharing these feelings/thoughts.

Please feel free to add any other comments
I really appreciated and valued the facilitator’s openness in talking about his experiences in life and his motivations and reasons for running the course. It really made the course more special and wholesome, in a way, instead of just focusing on public speaking from a business/work environment. I feel like I signed up for the course thinking I would learn new techniques and how to focus on public speaking at work/professional setting but I got much more than that. I appreciated the opportunity to be vulnerable because of how respective the group was and the safe space that the facilitator created. I also appreciated the handouts which summarise what we covered across the two days. I think the title of the course “taking your place in the world” is very fitting.

I wanted to learn how to be comfortable when speaking in front of people.

Did you get it?
Yes I did 100%.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
The organisation and delivery of the course is fantastic. Can’t think of a better way to do it.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I liked the good combination of theory and practice. Learning by doing through the baby steps was effective in every way!

This course is powerful and lifechanging in every way. And I’m so glad I was a part of something so transformational. Thank you so much for your gentleness, passion, dedication, and desire to transform people like me who let anxiety get into their way. I now see public speaking as having a normal conversation. You have literally opened the skies for me. The stars are the only limit for me going forward.

Alan writes about a two day course in Manchester
Thanks for an amazing course John - it has genuinly given me a much needed boost of self belief and confidence. Thanks so much!

What did you want from the course?
Essentially to stop the blind fear and crippling anxiety that I experience ahead of public speaking. And to also build my confidence in this area, learning some techniques to utilise ahead of upcoming public speaking events (aka conversations 🙂)

Did you get it?
Yes, I did. As you know, I was concerned after day one if we were going to be taught skills on how to prep a presentation or create a speech. However, I trusted the process, and in the end it was a far deeper and more essential exploration of what is holding me back from public speaking. It will take practice, but I do feel I now have the toolkit to apply to my life - not just with public speaking, but with life in general.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I genuinly can't think of anything - it was fantastic. My fellow students were all amazing as well, I was so lucky to have experienced such a special and important 2 days with such an inspiring group of people.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I liked the relaxed presenting style - it was very much a "trust me" approach, requiring me not to worry about what's coming next or what's on the agenda tomorrow. And I liked this. You were also a fantastic facilitor, John - very warm, knowledgebale and encouraging. I cannot prasie your approach enough.

Jessica writes about a Bristol course
Hello John,
Thank you for the most valuable and enjoyable course experience of my life to-date! I love the wholehearted way you go about your work and found the whole experience incredibly powerful.

What did you want from the course?
To feel more comfortable about the prospect of presenting to groups of people. To build my confidence so that I can reduce my feeling of needing to over-compensate with extra words/research/proof of my value/knowledge/experience.

Did you get it?

Absolutely

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Sorry, I can’t think of anything I’d have liked you to improve or do differently.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I loved how the steps were small and so layered up, which built to incredibly powerful transformations during the course of a day/two days. Exactly as you described, but was astonishing to experience it. I also loved the way that you facilitated us as a group to really focus on the work in hand and to find our enormous shared experience/common ground on that (with each other as well as a majority of so many other humans!). It meant that we had no need for some of the standard conversations around ‘what’s your background’ etc. So refreshing.

I found the course, and working with you, so inspiring and exciting. I really think you are wonderful, and having such an impact on people’s lives.

Natalie talks about the same Bristol course

What did you want from the course?
To gain confidence in myself with public speaking in presentations and in general group

Did you get it?
Yes!

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Nothing needs to be improved, the course was amazing.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
Usually in a group setting I feel very anxious and on edge, but this was completely different, and I felt relaxed very quickly and felt I was in a positive and safe environment. There were lots of baby steps in the course which I loved as was a much gentler way into public speaking. John ensured there was no pressure to be involved in the activities, but as he was such a great support for us all, we all got involved and loved it.

I absolutely loved the course, I already feel much more confident (spoke up a lot on a zoom meeting this morning!) and the course has opened me up to wanting to invest in myself further because I now know I am worth the investment, thank you!

Andy writes about a two day course in Manchester
Dear John,
Thanks for your kind words and encouragement, I thought it was one of the best courses I’ve attended, exceeding all expectations. My feedback is below.

What did you want from the course?
My main objective for attending the course was to be more confident and comfortable when delivering presentations in work.

Did you get it?
Yes, plus a lot more. Whilst I may have attended with a fairly straightforward objective, in reality, I got a lot more from the course. Spending a couple of days with John and the other attendees really helped me to look at why I was struggling with confidence and being the centre of attention. It’s provided me with numerous tools to take forward in developing more confidence, which I’m very grateful for.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I’m struggling to think of suggestions for improvement, I thought the content and delivery were both exceptional.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I really enjoyed the pace and subtle delivery of the course. We were gently eased into it on the first day, with no pressure placed on any of us. As the course progressed, it was great to see the other attendees blossom, becoming more confident speaking in front of the group.

Please feel free to add any other comments
I’d just like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to John for devising and delivering such a great course. The two days spent on the course were a fantastic experience, meeting some great people and learning a lot. I’d encourage anybody to do the course that are interested in gaining more confidence in public speaking.

January 2023

into my 23rd year of teaching…

Joshua came on my course in Manchester and gave me a google five star review on 22nd January
The course was simply excellent. John created a fun and trusting environment to learn in. The amount of change in us all was amazing!! Have not enjoyed myself so much in years. Have let go of my fears to speak in public....thank u John!

Sophie came on a course in October and sends her feedback about a Bristol course
I was very nervous beforehand but quite quickly realised I was with 9 people who all felt the same, which made it all so much easier. I learned a lot of powerful tools and ways of thinking which I am reciting to myself daily weeks later. The things learned on the course have absolutely changed my life

Andrew writes a letter and sends his feedback about a two day course in Manchester

Hi John,
I decided to hold back on my feedback until I had attended the Office Meeting that I was dreading as whilst I found the course to be incredibly useful and empowering I wanted to see if I could take the learnings into a real life setting! AND I COULD!!
Whilst I wasn’t formally presenting yesterday I did lead some of the meeting and needed to be comfortable being centre of the attention. All the work we did around blank faces, allowing ourselves time and pausing helped so so much, I actually went from being anxious about the meeting to actually enjoying it! Acknowledging that I was feeling anxious about the meeting beforehand and not trying to fight the anxiety also made a big impact.
I have read a number of books on anxiety and public speaking fear but nothing can compare to your course, being in that setting with a very supportive tutor and a supportive group just takes all that theory to the next level in terms of impact.
There is a church at the end of my road, and they had a sign outside that read “There is Hope” and as I walked past it yesterday after the meeting I thought yes there is! So, thank you, thank you so very much, I do think you have given me the courage to begin to take my place in the world and I feel very optimistic about the future!

What did you want from the course?
To tackle my anxiety over public speaking and to reach a mindset where I could stop hiding, I didn’t expect to rid my anxiety around public speaking but I guess was looking for tools or techniques that I could use to help to face these situations.

Did you get it?

Absolutely, and more

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Nothing I can think of at all, I found the course and facilitation to be fantastic, best course I have ever been on without question

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
Breaking it down into small steps really helped, discussing the “fear” and the psychology behind it and then rationalising it.  You are a very supportive trainer which is so important in creating that trust and some of the stories you shared as well were inspirational. Being able to practice with a supportive  group as well is the key to it all as well, putting that theory into practice

Please feel free to add any other comments
Just marvellous!

Thank you, thank you again!
All the very best

December 2022

Hi John
Just wanted to say a huge thank you for running such a valuable course. I feel like I now need to find/create opportunities to practise using the tool kit you gave us over the two days, the idea of which would have filled me with terror just yesterday morning.

The course was well structured yet free flowing and enlightening without being heavily facilitated. I think it is clearly a tribute to your management of the course that participants felt they could be open and honest sharing such wonderful and personal stories.

Thanks again and wishing you and your wife a very merry Christmas

Elliott writes about a two day course in Bristol

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to face a fear. My thinking beforehand was that if I chucked myself in front of people and done it enough, the physiological symptoms would go away. I was naive to think this, and the course highlighted how I had to reframe my thinking first.
Most of all, I was hoping the course would provide ample opportunity to simply get up and speak. I was provided this, and more!

Did you get it?
Most definitely.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
It may seem like a lazy answer, but honestly nothing. I like how you mentioned lessons learned over the years, showing that it's been a growth journey for you as well. The people you have taught and their stories have culminated into you being able to work on your craft, giving the best possible experience for your attendees. I didn't know what I was expecting, but my expectations were exceeded.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I like that the focus wasn't only on the talking, but also the exercises around being looked at. This eases you in.
I like the stories you tell. It helps us get to know you as a person, which helps with being comfortable in the room. I love how you are not afraid to show emotion, it's refreshing to see.
The re-framing of the thinking was the most important part for me. I'm never mean to others when they speak, so why should I do it to myself? Assume support always!

Mathew James writes about a two day course in Bristol

What did you want from the course?
To build greater confidence amongst people and feel less self-conscious when having to speak in public – either when doing a presentation or in meetings.

Did you get it?
Yes, in barrel loads. What I’ve learned from analysing the audience and changing that perception has been truly invaluable! I’ll never forget this. It’s definitely removed part of my self-consciousness already.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Having given it 10 minutes of thought, nothing springs to mind immediately. The course is quite intense, but it needed to be, as there’s so much important stuff to cover. More breakouts may suit some, but it wasn’t something I felt was lacking.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
The delivery and your style. I’ve sat in so, so many courses, which have been so well prepared in terms of the content, but the presenter (hate that word) wasn’t able to grab the audience. It’s such a skill, but it’s more about the person in my opinion. After the two days, you became the ‘cool uncle figure’ that everybody will look for to give you that sound bit of advice. I can hear the voice now.

Please feel free to add any other comments
I just can’t recommend the course enough. For me, somebody who’s delivered many presentations and training sessions over the past 15 years - it’s enriched my ‘life skills’ first and foremost, which can then be extended to public speaking. Yes, I’ve learnt about the audience, blank faces and maintaining eye contact, all of which will be used in the coming weeks – but what’s been most valuable is stripping back the confidence issues and ‘unhooking’ those negative thoughts. The term unhooking is just perfect, and it’s something I’ve used every day since. As a result, I’ve become happier, which is going to make a real difference to both me and my family.
In explaining the course to others, I just can’t do it justice – it was so powerful.

Matheus writes about a two day course in London
Dear John,
This past week I've been absorbing everything I felt during the course. First, I'd like thank you. People like you, who dedicate their time and wisdom to help others become a better versions of themselves, changing their lives. It's very inspirational. I feel more confident ever since and I've been trying to apply challenges to become more "comfortable by being uncomfortable" and I realise it's a process where I gotta repeat, repeat, repeat. I described this feeling more below. Great insights and techniques overall, that really made a difference in my life.
Kind regards,
Matheus

What did you want from the course?
First, I felt anxious about doing the course, but when I saw John's methology of "baby steps" towards public speaking, I felt confident to do it. I was feeling that my anxiety was getting in the way of my life and this was a good way to get back on the wheel. I wanted to learn skills so I'd feel less shy and nervous when I have to give a presentation or I'm in a big group gathering.

Did you get it?
Yes, what was taught in the course really helped me change my mindset. The techniques really opened my eyes to a whole new perspective of how to deal with public speaking and the feelings that surround it.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I have to say I was quite satisfied in general. Maybe if there were more real life tasks as "homework" following the course it would be nice. So the learnings can really stick in our minds.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
The atmosphere was great, everybody was a bit nervous in the beginning, but John quickly turned that around and made everyone feel more comfortable. I liked the way he conducted the steps towards public speaking, taking one step at a time, so I could slowly build my confidence. You could see how authentic and considerate John was with everyone individually. The venue was great as well.

Tom, a company director, writes about a two day course in Bristol

Thank you very much for the course last week. It was very enlightening and I am sure it will help me massively moving forward in life!

What did you want from the course?
To ease me back into public speaking, be able to cope with the perceived anxiety/brain fog that comes with it. Be able to draw on tips for upcoming weddings.

Did you get it?
In short yes, being able to understand the mental aspect behind the worry will definitely benefit me. Understanding audiences and that anxiety is ‘normal’ (not being anxious about being anxious). Breathing/pausing/eye contact

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I got everything I wanted from the course so off the top of my head there is nothing that I thought was missing/could be improved

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
How interactive it was – it wasn’t just telling us how to do it, you made* us get up and put it into practise. I felt improvement every time I got up infront of the group to speak. I can draw on this experience now when I need to speak publicly. (* no one is ever made to do anything on the course, everything is an invitation, there is no pressure from me, you can opt out of exercises, just in case you are worried about that word! - John)

Please feel free to add any other comments
Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it! Hands down the best/most productive course I have ever taken. It will benefit me for life. Thanks a lot for your help.

October 2022

Sometimes feedback just absolutely flaws me and makes me weep…

Morning John,
Wanted to say thank you for the past couple of days. It was incredibly impactful. I feel quite emotional this morning to be honest. For most of my life I've felt profoundly alone on some level. The realisation that I don't need to feel ashamed for simply existing or to hide who I am is incredibly liberating.
All the best

Mark writes about a two day course in Bristol
What did you want from the course?
I wanted to open my mind to new approaches/ material/ guidance on why I have a moderate fear of public speaking, and learn how I can manage that fear in a better way. I wanted to be given the opportunity to use the etchniques taught in a safe environment, and get more comfortable with 'getting up there' and feeling more comfortable with being uncomfortable - which I have learnt is a normal way to feel.

Did you get it?
Yes. I felt the course was very comprehensive, warm, inviting, meaningful and facilitated excellently. It will genuinely be a course that stays with me for life. The course has given me the inspiration to 'walk towards my fear' and learn to practice and be comfortable in the spotlight.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I felt that following the two intensive days of tuition, I personally could do with follow on opportunities with a similar like-minded, supportive group of people to practice 'being up there' more - with John still present as a guiding figure and coach.

I wish there were more opportunities to do this!

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
The facilitation was warm, engaging, personal, energetic, fun and inspiring. I really felt supported throughout, and I felt that John was there to deliver pointers when necessary, but John also allowed me to go through the motions of feeling what it is like when standing in groups of people, to start to get used to that without interjecting. It really was a life changing environment to be in,
I researched a lot to find a course that offered the specific training that I needed. I didn't want a typical 'how to present a power-point' type training, although that has its uses, but my challenges were more around how I feel inside me when presenting. John's course and the description of it just resonated with me so powerfully and I knew it would be exactly what I needed. . . and it delivered!

Philip writes about a two day course in Bristol

What did I want from the course?
In a nutshell, my idea was that I wanted to be able to stand up in front of a group of (unknown) people and speak without nerves or any anxiety leading up to the event.

Did I get it?
Although I had a basic understanding of the content of the course by looking at your website, I hadn’t expected it to go into detail on confidence in such a massive way. But, this was exactly what I needed; underpinning confidence which sometimes slips away because of age old anxiety and reptilian brain reaction. Until we realise this then we can’t address it. So, in essence, the course gave the complete picture and, I suspect, and having attended some others, it would be more than any other course would give me.

What could be improved about the course/venue?
Both were great. Seriously good. At the venue, I liked the coffee machine and the catering. I like the relaxed style of the course.

What did I like about the course/facilities?
Without doubt, the course is an invaluable insight into ‘why’ rather than ‘how’. ‘How’ is easy if we know the why. That is what your course does. That is why I (actually) enjoyed it. Each exercise took me outside my comfort zone. Development like this gives the brain creativity. I can now see that this kind of creativity gives me confidence. Confidence of being me. That is exactly what I needed.

Two bits of feedback from weddings, it’s that season!

Hi John
Hope you’re well! Just wanted to let you know that my speech at the wedding on Friday went super well, I was nervous before but I managed to keep my nerves mostly in check without letting them runaway from me. About halfway through I actually started to enjoy it and I had some interaction with the groom and the crowd during it. I ad-libbed some of it too based on things that happened on the day and during the speech.
Lots of people came up to me after to say they loved the speech, they all said I looked and sounded very confident and some people even said it was one of the best wedding speeches they’d heard!
Massively appreciate all the help you gave me on the course and in our coaching session, it made the world of difference.
Thanks
Pete

Dear John
I made a chat at our daughter's wedding and it was a great success! How amazing is that!
I’m really proud of my chat and the response I got and more importantly that my daughter was thrilled.
The following Week I went to an open air theatre production where one of the cast pounced and asked me to read something out to the audience. I did it. Brazenly. Confidently.
Thank you John. There’s a new side to me and I’m enjoying it.
Kind regards.
Judy

Jess writes about a two day course in Manchester

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to feel less anxious when speaking in front of others and to feel more confident in myself in general.

Did you get it?
Yes, I got this and more. The course was way more than I ever expected. I went into the course thinking it might help with speaking in front of people at work and instead it made me open up, think about who I am and accept who I am. It helped me to understand why I struggle with having all eyes on me and why this is normal and okay.
It helped me to realise that I'm not alone and that I am brave in the fact I wanted to do something about it to help myself. The course helped me to realise that a lot of people feel the same but manage to hide it easily and that most people live in their own world rather than worrying about mine. You helped me to be vulnerable and open up to others and connect on a deeper level with people I had only known for a matter of hours.
The course helped me to realise how hard I have been on myself for so long! I never realised how much I was talking down to myself and after the first day when I got home, I got quite emotional thinking about how I've been treating myself since I was a child.

The most important part of the course that helped me was to realise that I am deserving of my place in the world, I am deserving of standing in front of people and making mistakes and being vulnerable, I am deserving of walking down the street with my head held high and I am deserving of speaking up and being listened to. I cannot describe to you the impact you have had on my life and the only thing I was disappointed with was the length of the course because I didn't want to leave! I don't think anyone has ever fully understood the way I feel like you do, and to be seen so vulnerable but be accepted is something I will cherish forever.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
There isn't much that needs to be improved upon but maybe at the end of the course setting some goals to leave the course with so you have something to focus on.
I would also say this course could be longer. I would happily have stayed on this course for a full 5 days but I understand this may be difficult.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the course. It didn't feel too formal like we were part of a work meeting, it felt like a safe space to open up in. The course didn't feel forced and I didn't feel pressure to do anything I didn't want to but I felt a sense of wanting to get involved and wanting to push myself. Again, this is probably down to the informal nature of the course and you making it feel so comfortable and safe.

Please feel free to add any other comments
Please keep doing what you are doing and never change. Your emotion, vulnerability and drive to want to help people really shone through and it really helped me to relax, open up and get involved! And thank you so much for everything, I hope we can stay in touch.

All the best,
Jess

Five months after her course, Janet reports back

Hi John
I attended one of your courses in February, but have waited until now to provide feedback. That's because I knew when I attended in February that I would, today, have to present a strategy session to a room of partners at work.
At the point at which I chose to attend your course, I had developed such an intense fear of public speaking that I could barely introduce myself in a meeting. I'd dodged anything resembling public speaking for many years.
With this unavoidable presentation, to a senior audience, lying ahead of me, my attending your course was a last ditch attempt at becoming 'ok' with public speaking. The alternative was going to involve quitting my job and leaving my industry altogether.
Having delivered the presentation today, feeling calm, confident and in control, I can now report that attending your course has changed my life!
I feel as though a door has opened - there are all sorts of opportunities that I can now pursue in my professional life.
Thank you so much for your wonderful teaching.
Janet

June 2022

Judy doesn’t get what she wanted from a course!

Dear John
That was an extraordinary couple of days. Everybody was on my mind all day yesterday. I kept mulling over these wonderful, genuine, kind people who I would never have met or had the privilege to appreciate without your course.
Thank you John. Life Changing.
Very kind regards
Judy

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to know how to stand up in front of 120 people and make a speech that would engage them.
I thought I would learn some of the things on this list:
design a simple universal speech structure
- apply each of the 3 contrasts necessary for vocal variety
- demonstrate each of the 3 principal reasons for strong eye-contact
- demonstrate each of the 3 principal types of speaking gesture
- identify when to stand and when to move
- use the voice as a tool to embed key words and key concepts

Did you get it?
No. THANK HEAVENS! THANK HEAVENS! THANK HEAVENS!
I can imagine how inadequate I would feel and how awful my wedding chat would be if I'd gone on that course. UGH.

I got something I didn't know I wanted; the skills to be myself in front of strangers, to take my time, breathe, falter, make a mistake. Just be. This is empowering and life-changing. With practice I will be able to GIVE a 'chat', engage with people rather than make a speech. no gestures (forheavenssake) or vocal variety other than my own.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
The course was entirely positive. Not once were we given a 'don't ' instruction.
At first I thought it was slow. But you were giving everyone a voice and the listeners the space to relate to others. It was good to take small steps.
Being with other completely different people with similar issues was very helpful. Seeing their progression was empowering.

Ian writes about a two day course in Bristol

Hello John,
Thank you so much for the kind words and for your patient guidance and support during the course.
All the best with the course and working with the new groups. You have a great skill for creating a supportive and trusting environment and allowing people to find their inner voice.
Thanks once again for everything.
Best regards, Ian.

What did you want from the course?
I was initially just hoping for some tips / coping mechanisms to reduce the anxiety I felt when speaking publicly, and which I knew was holding me back in my career and personal relationships.

Did you get it?
The course delivered so much more than this. It provided a wonderfully supportive atmosphere to begin exploring the causes, and commonality, of the anxious feelings that being the centre of attention generated for me. By explaining the sources of these feelings and being given the time and space to experience and practice their acceptance, they were gradually minimised.

For me this proved an immensely freeing experience. By reframing public speaking as a collection of chats, rather than a performance, your patient guidance meant I was able to experience a level of comfort whilst speaking which I did not think possible. Rather than tips, I have been allowed to earn the knowledge, gained from practical experience, of the benefits of acting with confidence.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I can’t think of any improvements.

What actions of confidence are you going to explore in the next two weeks?
I have found myself volunteering my opinion during meetings to clarify my thoughts and position on subjects which affect me. I have agreed to undertake a couple of supplementary training opportunities which have been offered to me, to proactively increase my experience level. I have been invited to the preparation for an academic conference. I will prioritise not just observing how the speaker presents but also actively watch the audience to increase my comfort with this aspect.

On a personal level, I have decided to start taking formal guitar lessons with the clear aim to reach a level that allows me to perform publicly. This is something I have thought about, but not put into direct action for many years. I am also trying to remember to find opportunities to have a conversation with shop tellers and members of the public during the day.

Russell writes about a two day course
Hi John,
Apologies for the delay in my feedback but I wanted to wait and see how my best man’s speech went first! The wedding was on Saturday and I’m delighted to say I ended up thoroughly enjoying giving the speech and got some great feedback.
The bride and grooms’ families all rushed over to thank me and the best praise came from the wedding photographer, who said it was one of the best she’s heard as there were no cheesy one liners plucked from the internet!
The techniques and mindset shifts we learnt during the course helped me immensely in the build up to the wedding; I was still nervous but at no point felt overwhelmed and as soon as I got a big laugh from my opening, I relaxed completely and almost wished I made it another 5 minutes longer! I don’t think I’ll ever fully conquer the nerves but I feel very relaxed and assured now, knowing it’s something I can do and it’s not something to worry about. Thanks a lot for all your help.
Best, Russell

Tabatha writes about a two day course in Manchester
What did you want from the course?

I wanted to create some confidence in my own abilities to stand up and speak publicly. I was hoping to learn about why most of us get nervous when it comes to public speaking and from that understanding hopefully calm my own nerves.

Did you get it?
Most definitely. The content and knowledge around why we are nervous was mind blowing. So simple yet something that is never taught to us in life. By having the knowledge I was able to then rationalise my own thoughts and nerves and over the course of the 2 days we spent with John, my confidence to stand in front of others and talk naturally was a million miles away from how I felt at the start of the first day.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I honestly enjoyed every aspect of this course, if anything I probably would of enjoyed another day on top of the two days but I think that was because I just enjoyed it so much, there wasn’t anything I felt was missing or could of been added. It was great that John kept asking us throughout if there was anything we felt hadn’t been covered yet so we managed to cover anything we felt missing within the two day sessions...

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I loved that there was a mix of teachings, pair work and group work. We managed to work with pretty much everyone in the class which was amazing because you get to know everyone really well and get different perspectives. This also helped to make it feel like a safe environment that you could be vulnerable in and I think John is fantastic at promoting that and making everyone feel really comfortable from the get go.
I loved that John would ask every single person in the group their feedback after each exercise because it makes you reflect each time and also encourages you to say something when in other sessions you may not say anything at all. It made your opinion feel valued and included.
The content was really high level and really valuable. Everything John covered and talk about felt relevant to me. There was many ‘aha’ moments. On the first day explaining how we interpret audience blank faces was literally life changing – this is something I had never considered and sub consciously struggled with – without even knowing it.
I could go on and on about what I liked but I really felt the whole course was really well thought out, planned and flowed well over the two days.

Please feel free to add any other comments if you wish:
John, your work is truly life changing. If I could gift this course to every person in my family I would because I can see how each person would benefit from taking this course. It not only transforms your perspective on public speaking, it relates so much to so many instances in life and how we can change our mindset to overcome them.

Alex came on the course just before his wedding!
Dear John,
Your course works. It works better than I ever thought was possible and I want you to know you are changing lives with what you do. I absolutely smashed my wedding speech and it was a "coming of age" for many differing aspects of my life. I couldn't have done it without you and your unique style of teaching. Keep doing what you are doing and thank you once again, you helped make my wedding an absolutely epic event, with my speech remembered for years to come. I was able to enjoy every aspect of my wedding, without the anxiety I had previously left unresolved.
Cheers again
Alex

Dear John,
It was wonderful to work with and meet you on the course. It was one of the very best things I've ever done and I feel very inspired by it. I've already put it into practice on my friend's podcast and I felt relaxed and present. I'm planning to go to an open mic night and try some off the cuff poetry, just make it up stood in front of the audience the thought of which really excites me. I think i'm going to look back at attending your course as a really pivotal moment in my personal development. Thank-you from the bottom of my heart for running the course. You've helped me & inspired me enormously and i'll never forget it.
Warmest wishes,
Greg

What did you want from the course?
More confidence speaking in front of people

Did you get it?
Yes in bucketfulls! I'm now excited about the prospect of public speaking and will be taking every opportunity to practice it.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
The format, the structure, the chance to practice presenting, bonding with the other participants.

March 2022

Hi John,
Just wanted to drop you a quick email to thank you. I did my presentation last week to 300 people at the conference, I was petrified beforehand but your techniques and advice calmed my nerves. When I stood up all the worry floated away and I delivered the best presentation of my life, I felt so confident and felt like I deserved to be in the space, the Q&A session went fantastically, and I took my time and gave considered responses. Since the presentation I’ve had numerous people contact me saying how much they enjoyed it and have made some great connections for the future.
I can honestly say the things I learned in your course have changed my outlook on life and my feelings towards myself. I feel so much happier in my day to day life and have recommended your course to almost everyone I know!
So, thank you for everything you’ve done for me, a real game changing experience.
Best wishes,
Sam

What did you want from the course?
Feel more confident about public speaking, understand where the fear comes from

Did you get it?
Yes, I feel much more confident

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Would struggle to find an improvement as I really enjoyed the 2 days

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
John brought the course to life with great stories and a gentle, understanding approach. Loved the practical practise sessions

A different Shaun writes about a two day course in London
Thank you so much for what you did over the two day course. I never in a million years thought I’d ever be able to do what I did in front of a group of people.

What did you want from the course?
To not feel like the world is going to end every time I’m presented with the possibility of standing up and talking to a group of people

Did you get it?
Absolutely. No longer do I feel like I need to come up with an excuse when told I need to brief people, or present something to people. Dare I say I’m even looking forward to the next opportunity to prove I can do it.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I’m not sure I can really think of anything. I love the fact you don’t send out an itinerary as I think not knowing 100% what you’re walking in to actually helped.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
It just felt like a safe space. I guess it helps knowing everyone is there for similar reasons, but not once did I feel judged, or like I was being made fun of. A group of 10 is just about the right number too. It’s enough to make it a crowd, but not so many that it’s too overwhelming for the reason I was there.

Please feel free to add any other comments if you wish:
I just wish I had signed up sooner. I’ve been running away from this problem for about 15 years, maybe more. I was sceptical about the course when I signed up, and knew I would be facing my fears by turning up, but I am so glad I did.

Leila Turney talks about a two day course in Manchester

Hi John,
I just wanted to say thank you so much for creating such a safe space and a genuinely enjoyable two days.
Many thanks
Leila

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to feel more confident and to stop focussing on all the negative points about myself.

Did you get it?
Yes I honestly did. I noticed after the first session that I wasn't dwelling on things that I usually dwell on, and I felt more present. Conversations that would have usually made me feel self conscious, were actually just conversations, and I was able to focus on the idea that when people are talking or even when I'm talking, they're not thinking about me or if I have said something silly. And even if they are, it's not the end of the world!

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I enjoyed the discussion around how as humans, we haven't had an update since language. I don't know whether it would be a good idea to add something about society today and the pressure not only we put on ourselves, but what's expected of us - just a brief discussion on how that makes people feel perhaps?

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I liked that on the first day, everything was done at a gentle pace. There was no pressure to do anything, and a safe space was created straight away. Your approach over the two days was like having a conversation the entire time, which made it very easy to share things without feeling judged. By talking about how I was feeling nervous and shaky, it started to take the power and focus away from these feelings. The size of the group was great because it was just enough to still create the feelings of being in a large group, but not too many that it was overwhelming.

Johns course is the first course I have done in the past two years where I have felt genuinely comfortable to be myself. I am an introvert and when it comes to presenting in a group, this is something that really panics me and I will feel anxious about it days before and days after! Since doing the course, my focus has shifted so much. I feel more present, and my mind is a lot lighter. The techniques John showed throughout the two days are clear and easy to to use in everyday life. The course is not just about public speaking, it lets you explore where you are in life and where you could be by just accepting yourself. The groups are small and a safe space is created straight away. Everyone genuinely wants each other to do well, and it such a supportive environment.
I cannot recommend it enough.

Antoinette Levene‑Derizzio writes about a two day course in London
What did you want from the course?
Not only did I learn the art of public speaking, but I also learned the value of being at ease in your own skin.

Did you get it?
I have noticed a dramatic change which has impacted my social and work life already (it’s only been a weekend). I had multiple conversations with strangers and feel confident enough to have a “chat” with a large group of work colleagues.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I would love for the course to be longer, but I know that this is not necessary (it’s because the atmosphere is very welcoming).

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
John only makes you practice exercises that you feel comfortable with. You have enough breaks in between sessions to recoup and reflect on what you have learnt.

Please feel free to add any other comments if you wish:
I would like to recommend this course to everyone even if you do not have an issue with public speaking.

Milo writes about a course in Manchester
Hi John,
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner - this week has been absolutely hectic. I almost felt hungover for several days after your course - what a reward and exhausting experience it was! I cannot thank you enough - I feel this is the start of a seismic shift in my life and can't wait to practise and develop.
Thanks,
Milo

What did you want from the course?
The reason I took the course was to reduce my anxiety around public speaking. I wanted to build confidence and improve my ability to communicate - I would often freeze and not be able to articulate myself to the level I wanted, especially in a group setting or to superiors.

Did you get it?
I definitely got this, and more. This course has completely changed the way I think about communication in general - even in the week since the course I have noticed myself speaking up more, articulating my points more effectively and feeling a bit more care-free about communicating.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I don't really have any suggestions - I thought the structure of the course worked really well. The only thing I would have liked to explore/practise more was movement. It got introduced organically by K… fairly late on - wish I had a few more goes getting comfortable taking the space in this way.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I loved how quickly that space became a positive and safe environment to explore anxieties around public speaking. Your approach was authentic and compassionate which allowed me to trust you and what you were saying - I was much more able to be open-minded during the process as a result. The inside-out approach to public speaking really allowed me to exercise fears/anxieties that would usually impede my ability to communicate effectively - it was such an eye-opening experience. I have recommended the course to all my siblings and several of my friends - It goes well beyond public speaking and I hope the course continues to help many more people 'take their place in the world'.

I am sure you have heard it a million times before, but I think describing those two days as a 'course' in no way does it justice. I have never been able to stand up in front of a group of people and speak to them in that way before. It was absolutely revelatory. I was cautiously hopeful when I saw how life-changing the other reviews suggests the course was, and it surpassed all of my wildest expectations.

Five star google review from Jamie Gardiner from a Manchester course in January
I attended John's course in Manchester last week having struggled with elements of public speaking for some time. I'm now left wondering why I waited so long - the course exceeded all of my expectations and I've come out of it with an entirely new attitude to public speaking.
John is probably one of the most authentic people I've come across and it was a pleasure to be in his company for the two days. One thing that's really surprised me is that what he taught is applicable not just to public speaking, but many other areas of life.
I would highly recommend this course to anybody looking to improve upon their public speaking, either professionally or personally.
Thanks again John - if there was 6th star I would give it.

Kevin writes about a Manchester course
What did you want from the course?
To become more comfortable and confident speaking in front of people in larger or smaller groups, in particular when put on the spot in a meeting, or asked to say an impromptu "few words" with no opportunity to prepare slides etc. I would tend to tense up and find it hard to say anything very smoothly and would get nervous all of a sudden!

Did you get it?
Yes without a doubt. The course was aimed fairly and squarely at my sort of issue and everything that we did was helpful in addressing the issue that I had. What you showed us and what we practiced was simple but very effective and by the end of the course I felt many times more confident.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Not much, as it was excellent.
My only remark on this is that in the current climate with many people attending meetings remotely it may be worth addressing remote meetings a bit more specifically. However in reality the issues are the same and what you have taught can be used as much for remote meetings as in person ones.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I would say it was the best course I have ever been on. It was delivered with a lot of commitment and passion and everyone on the course really bought into it and gave it 100%.

feedback from a two day course in Bristol

Hi John,
Many thanks for what you did on the course last week, this is the best course I have ever been on.
I would recommend to anyone feeling anxious when talking a role that involves public speaking, or even confidence in everyday life.
Many thanks

Elaine writes about a two day course in Bristol
What did you want from the course?
Confidence and as a toolkit to help calm my nerves - I tend to over prepare and avoid opportunities but the next phase of growth in my business requires me to have the ability to speak to large groups and audiences.

Did you get it?
Yes definitely, I can't want to try my new skills out!

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
It all worked well for me.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
It felt tailored to the group and John seemed to understand where each and every delegate was on their journey. He had extraordinary focus on every little thing and wasn't afraid to hone in very gently when the individual opportunities / issues came up

Hi John,
First of all, I’d like to thank you for providing the course, the work you’re doing is truly amazing. I really struggle labelling what you’re doing a ‘course’ which I’m sure attendees will have said before. You’re a real person, teaching real things with real emotions. Honestly, I would really struggle to do anything in my lifetime that would be as beneficial for my personal development. I’m so glad I took the leap out of my comfort zone,  as I’m sure everybody in that room is. Keep up the fantastic work you’re doing, I’ll keep practising my ‘jacuzzi’ pauses.
Many thanks
Rob

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to overcome my fear of public speaking and learn to enjoy it.

Did you get it? Yes

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I thought the course was perfect and worked well just as it is.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I liked the way the learning was step by step and in particular the way the actual standing up and speaking part built up slowly. John was very supportive, empathic and engaged wanting us to learn.

Please feel free to add any other comments if you wish:
This is an amazing learning experience. It was great to be involved and to interact with the other participants - also a pleasure to meet them and to see their growth as the course unfolded. The course is called Taking your place in the world and I feel like you have enabled me to do just that. I could always see the doorway but I didn’t want to step through - I can now and I feel excited to see what’s there. Thank you, John!!!

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to have the opportunity to talk in front of others, with some helpful strategies of how to do it. - and prove to myself that I could.

Did you get it?
Yes I did - thank you

What could be improved about the course/facilitation? On-going classes/ courses or meet ups

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I thought John was the perfect facilitator. Friendly, compassionate, strong energy and buoyant. I was surprised how much I enjoyed the weekend, and what a positive step it was for my life.

Please feel free to add any other comments if you wish:
One of my biggest take aways was the action of becoming present prior to launching into a speech. This was hard, and took courage, but also something that applies to everything .... Becoming present then acting (as in taking action rather than performing - JD)

What did you want from the course?
To be more confident in standing in front of an audience or group

Did you get it? ----yes I did and so much more
What could be improved about the course/facilitation?- I’m not sure as I thought it was just great.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?-
The psychology and the interaction between John and other participants. It felt safe & contained, permission to be oneself………

John has a natural gift to be himself and therefore invite you to do the same. Learnt a lot about how to talk to an audience and to assume support from them.

Kathryn writes about a London course
I really enjoyed the course, it would be fair to say I’m shattered today though 😊

What did you want from the course?
The aim for me was to get to a point where the fear of public speaking was no longer holding me back. I wanted to feel more comfortable speaking in front of people, whether that be colleagues, clients or even just friends and family. I knew I had built up the fear to the point that I needed something different to overcome it.

Various people have tried to help me over the years. My well-meaning boss took me to Toastmasters on a few occasions, but it would be fair to say that was my idea of hell. I couldn’t identify with the experienced members who came for fun (weird!). I recognised that some people were there to improve and were also nervous but the format was stressful for me, the idea of being marked, judged, critiqued, was too much. I watched, but didn’t participate. It didn’t help in the slightest, I think it had an adverse effect, but because it had worked well for my boss (who I really respect) I thought that maybe I was beyond help.

Did you get it?
Yes. Having worked hard together to unpick my existing thoughts and learning a new mindset has been a revelation. I’m under no illusions that I have a lot more work to do, but it feels achievable. In a way I’m looking forward to the next opportunity to speak (chat) so that I can test my skills and begin to build on them.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
The course is well run and you clearly know your subject matter inside an out. Early on the first day I learned to trust you and the process. Course content and facilitation were good for me, no issues.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
There was much that I liked about the course and the style of facilitation. Importantly, a safe space was created early on. That seemed to have a momentum and by the end I felt a shared connection with all the people in the room. Quite astonishing considering we’d met less than 48 hours prior and I am not known for forming quick connections. Such varied people, every single one was fascinating. What a privilege.

In the past, I wouldn’t have seen any point in making connections with people who I’m unlikely to ever see again. I’ve avoided small talk, viewing it as a pointless exercise. I now see small talk as an opportunity to collect stories. What a revelation! There is a point to small talk after all. So I intend on doing a bit more of it at the same time using it as a way to grow my confidence. It doesn’t currently come naturally to me so I will work on it until it becomes more comfortable.

The course content was clever and delivered in such a subtle way as to take the learners on a journey. Although there were uncomfortable moments, the baby-steps made it achievable.

Please feel free to add any other comments if you wish: I’m so glad I did this course. I have taken a number of steps in recent years with the aim of self-improvement. Most have resulted in no small amount of self-discovery and this course has been no exception. I feel that when I reflect in years to come I will see this course as one of the milestones that have helped me along the way. You’re a clever man John! Thank you.

Alison writes about a two day course in Manchester she took in January and how things are changing already

What did you want from the course?
I wanted a magic wand to make my anxiety around public speaking just disappear. I had avoided any sort of presentation or public speaking course my whole life and when presentations came up at work I tried my best to get out of giving them. I had started to realise that this was really holding me back and I didn’t want to feel like this anymore – I wanted to conquer my fears.

Did you get it?
I got something much more realistic than a magic wand! I learnt some incredible techniques to help deal with a variety of scenarios which cause me anxiety. You have to put the work in to overcome these confidence issues and the course definitely helped me with that. I physically feel different now in some of the situations which would previously have caused anxiety.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Nothing – I never thought a public speaking course could be enjoyable (in a weird adrenaline pumping kind of way)!

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
The pace of the course was excellent, it was small steps which helped build the foundations and nothing felt too out of control – it was a very safe environment. The group were super supportive, and I enjoyed seeing everyone grow in confidence – I think it boosted us all. John was a fabulous facilitator, who showed real empathy and helped us all to take our place and shine.

Please feel free to add any other comments if you wish:

John, thank you so much for sharing all your wisdom and expertise – I can honestly say the slow and steady reframing around public speaking has made a massive difference to me already and that’s within 3 weeks!!! It was so great to meet people who have similar anxiety around public speaking – it felt very special to spend those two days with such a supportive group. I feel changed as a person, definitely for the better.
Best wishes,

Never thought in a million years I would not only learn so much in the space of two days but actually start implementing into daily life. You have changed my life John. Your relaxed approach and energy made me feel really comfortable in a space where I would usually be crippled with anxiety. It helped more than you could ever know. Anyway to the person reading considering this, I highly, highly recommend John's course. Was worth every single penny. Discomfort is the compass :)

Overall, I'm really happy that I went on this course. I think one day I will look back and see this as the turning point in my life, where I am now liberated to really live as myself. Thank you for your time to run this course, I really hope you continue to do it because I think everyone who goes on your course will come out better(or at least allow themselves to accept that they are a good person already)!
Thank you,
Tim

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to be more confident in myself and as extension, help with public speaking through being more confident.

Did you get it?
Yes, I really feel like a different person (in a good way) after the course. The 'It's OK to be yourself' advice is used a lot online or by other people but I felt the course really allowed me to believe it and apply it to myself.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Nothing to say here really.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
The small number of people really helped, I think everyone felt more comfortable speaking and each other as the course went on
The sense of progress and support from/for everyone.
The rules you set up at the beginning, especially around confidentiality. This really helped with me with committing to the course and being more open to sharing about myself.
The flow of course, it felt like I was incrementally improving with each exercise.

What actions of confidence are you going to explore in the next two weeks?
I have really put the 'assume support' point into practice. Already, I've had comments from colleagues about how I'm contributing more towards meetings. I have also taken to saying 'I'm allowed this space/I deserve to be here' when I feel a sense of dread. It's really changed my outlook on everything. I'm surprised at how positive my thoughts are about everything now.

I would highly recommend your course to anyone who would like to speak at a wedding. To be able to stand up and thank lots of people for their support was the best gift i could give to my wife on our wedding day. I learnt that the blank faces looking back at me were not judging me but were actually interested in what i had to say (and some i'm sure... were trying to remember what food they had ordered..haha!)
Thanks again

Hi John,
I really enjoyed the course and I agree with those who have said that it is much more than a public speaking course. It was really beneficial for me to have a bit of time and encouragement to think about what is getting in the way of me doing the things that I want to do. I realise that the work that we did is something that I will need to persevere with but it has been an incredibly useful (and big) first step. I did some public speaking last Friday and it went pretty well I think. Thank you for your encouragement and for modelling to me the courage to be a bit vulnerable. I think that this aspect of the course will stay with me the most.
Best wishes
Vanessa

What did you want from the course?
To become more confident in public speaking.

Did you get it?
Much more! I did definitely become more confident in public speaking but I also learnt the importance of having courage to not be perfect and to make mistakes.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Honestly nothing.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
The skills and philosophy of the approach was modeled by John for the entire duration of the course. John also enabled a group of people who had never met each other feel safe and comfortable with each other in just a few hours, so that it really felt like a group effort.

Hi John,
Thanks again for everything, it really was a brilliant and invaluable experience for me.
Warm wishes,
Saskia xx

What did you want from the course?
I got a huge amount from the course, but the main take away for me was really about how to be less harsh on myself. By gently reframing my thinking around public speaking, John invited me to ultimately take the pressure of myself to be anything in particular and instead just be. I felt more empathy for myself and others which felt empowering because it encouraged connection.

Did you get it?
I totally got it. I just wish everyone had the opportunity to do a course like this. Ideally it would be taught in all schools.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Not sure I can fault it really - hmmm, I'll get back to you if I can think of something.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I really appreciated the open and easy atmosphere John carefully created. It felt like a really safe, supportive space in which everyone could express themselves in an imperfect and unformed way and still feel held. It also felt really egalitarian, everyone was given the chance to explore ideas and really take ownership over the various exercises.

Please feel free to add any other comments if you wish:
I want to thank John for being so open, honest and readily vulnerable. I think it helped others express this side of themselves.

What actions of confidence are you going to explore in the next two weeks?
Everything but mainly to try to cultivate a feeling of being my own ally - I want to practice taking back my mind and trying not to put too much pressure on myself to perform or please others. I also want to root myself in the in the knowledge that whatever happens - it's okay as I think this will give me a deeper sense of courage.

Claire Bass writes about a two day course

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to stop planning presentations and speeches in infinite detail, fuelled by a belief that if I didn’t write everything I wanted to say down then I would stand up in front of people and become mute. I wanted to do this in order to connect with audiences, that rather than having all the passion and intrigue of a recitation of the phone book, I might be able to peak out from over the barricades and inspire them to care about and believe in what I have to say.

Did you get it?
Yes. Had someone told me a detailed course outline beforehand I would have been highly convinced that it wasn’t what I needed. I thought I needed someone to tell me how many bullet points per 100 words I should use to plan my presentation, or what colour marker pen is best for helping you remember amazing phrases that you just have to remember or you’ll have nothing to say. But it turned out all planning was a slightly desperate self-help mechanism for a person trying to connect with people from behind a wall of fear and self-doubt. I would have had no idea how hard it was to stand and look at people and not say anything. I would have had no clue how liberating it would feel to stand in front of 10 people and speak without a piece of paper in my hand, and hear myself say things that I liked. Now I have to practice, and I’m actually looking forward to that.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Nothing

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
Everything! This course was the most ‘present’ I have felt in a long time, it was almost meditative at times. And I liked that fact that you led by example – the whole course felt like a conversation, and so far more engaging than being ‘trained’. I really appreciated how open you were, too, showing us how powerful it can be to allow an audience to connect with your emotion at an individual level.

Hi John,
Thank you so much for the course. It was really really good, I love your approach and what you do. Have already recommended it to lots of people.
Thanks so much
Adam

What did you want from the course?
To get some confidence and practical tips to improve my public speaking.

Did you get it?
And so much more

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Honestly I thought it was great, it is very clear you have dedicated serious time to developing your approach and working out the best ways to hold space for people.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
It was friendly, fun, team building and took an unsuspecting audience much deeper in to themselves that I think they thought they would.

Dear John,
Sorry it’s taken so long to come back to you. I’m thrilled to say the learning has stuck. Whenever I have the opportunity to stand up and speak I do. I still feel that anticipation but I’m managing to breathe through it. Thank you so much for putting on this course, you really are changing people’s lives and I tell anyone who will listen to me!
Thanks again for everything
Sharon

What did you want from the course?
I wanted the course to help me get up in front of people and be able to speak confidently, without fear of judgement.

Did you get it?
Yes and then some!

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Nothing it was perfect.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
The safe space in provided to be open, honest and vulnerable in order to overcome my fear.

Please feel free to add any other comments if you wish:
Thank you John for helping me to find my confidence to stand in front of a room of people and be comfortable in the land of non-approval. When I was researching a course to help me overcome my fear I came across a review which said your course was ‘life changing’. I signed up with high expectations, but if I’m honest I didn’t feel they could be met. I’m happy to say I was wrong. If you have a morbid fear of public speaking as I used to, I urge you to sign up to this course, it really is life changing.

What actions of confidence are you going to explore in the next two weeks? I’ve already done these. Gave a presentation with one slide to convince my peers to change the way they work. My boss gave me 10mins notice to get up and provide the same presentation to the Executive team – and I was fine. I could have never done that before the course.

September 2020

Dear John,
It's been a few months now since I have been on your course.
I'm sorry for the delay in giving you feedback but I really wanted to put what I had learnt into action.

From the moment I walked in, I knew I was on the right course. You were so welcoming and very encouraging. Since going on the course I am pleased to say I did it!!! I spoke to the senior managers about the project I developed and they loved it! I remembered what i leant on the course and I smashed it.
What i also learnt from this was that i have been totally underselling myself, fear was keeping me from 'playing big'.
Ironically I have even done a micro teach on my teacher trainer course about Public Speaking!! Who'd have thought!! Everyone loved it, cause they could all relate it!!
I have been differently since going on the course. I still get nervous public speaking but my outlook and mind has changed.
Not only with public speaking but life in general. I feel free, im not so anxious, im not taking a back seat. I'm having conversations with people I normally wouldn't, pushing myself and creating opportunities where I can speak in public. Going forward it's inevitable that I'll go promotion.
I learnt so much from coming on your course. You have an amazing ability of holding the space for people experiencing this fear. Your approach, experience and skills are second to none.
Thank you John for doing what you do.
You have helped me and lots of other people to free from fear and just be.
Best Wishes,
Claire

Hi John,
Today I delivered a welcome speech (without notes) and a powerpoint presentation to 60 colleagues. This is something that I have been fearing and avoiding for almost a decade. Your courses were an essential and instrumental step towards me finally achieving this. I can now continue to speak to my colleagues and others without fear and this will change my life.
Many thanks again,
Murray

Dear John,
The course was momentous. It was a completely unique experience, and has shifted my opinion on many things. In the weeks after, I found myself playing it over in my head to work out what actually happened in Bristol.
It was brilliant. Thank you!
Tom

What did you want from the course?
I was terrified that I would spend the rest of my life with weeks at a time blotted out by anxious anticipation of an upcoming presentation. I hoped the course might change that.

Did you get it?
With a first public speech after the course now two days away, I feel that the landscape has started to shift. The simple idea that it’s okay to be myself (and a realisation of one’s permissiveness to others) is a powerful reframing of the whole scenario. So, yes.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
It is very hard to pinpoint anything.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
The combination of the material (e.g. talking about what matters to you) with the continual practice over the two days — somehow the messages from the course are indelibly etched in my mind.

Sophie Brooks writes about a two day course in Manchester
Thanks John - honestly a wonderful course.

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to shift my focus when I'm speaking in front of people. I've been afraid of being the centre of attention in more formal settings since I was a kid, I always felt the need to be smart/calm and it was holding me back. I wanted to be able to re-frame the "fear". To not get overwhelmed by the feelings. I feel I have a lot to give and I watch other people be confident speaking, and I was getting sick of feeling like I couldn't be one of them, when of course I can be.

Did you get it?
I got a LOT of very useful approaches/tactics/tools from the course. I still talk about it all the time and even try to share some of the nuggets of information with my team, and they're now using them. I realised it's about practicing confidence and that transpires into literally every interaction I have now. I think, assume support, understand the blank faces don't mean anything. When talking to groups, I understand more about how people listen and to not be too bothered when I'm not getting the expressions I would on a 121 basis. It feels a lot more realistic that one day soon i'll be able to talk in front of my whole business (300 people). It felt impossible before.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Nothing really... It was great.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
Not only is John an expert, he's an expert who really cares. That's why the course felt so powerful. I'm someone who often shuts down focus-wise in learning situations, I didn't get that AT ALL on the course. I liked the number of stories he used, this really helped me to listen and be engaged in everything he was saying. The group size was perfect and the space in Manchester was great too.

Dear John
Thanks for your email and the additional info. I have completed the feedback below.
My head is still spinning from the course- in a good way! You (and the other delegates) have made me realise that my thoughts about myself are often not correct/true which is a fundamental shift. I knew all about this cognitive approach in theory before the course but I am not sure I ever really believed in it fully- I do now.
I am truly thankful to you and the other delegates on the course whose courage and commitment was inspirational.
Best wishes
Stuart

What did you want from the course?
To be much more comfortable with public speaking

Did you get it?
Yes, and much more

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Nothing

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
John made the environment feel very safe. The pace and progression in difficulty of tasks was just right- challenging but not overwhelming. The permission to not take part or speak at any point was very permissive. The group size of 10 worked very well.

The course made me completely reassess the value of my (mostly negative) thoughts about public speaking. I feel much more comfortable with public speaking and able to cope with any associated anxiety. So pleased that I finally made the decision to go on the course after several months of deliberation and procrastination.

Jo writes about coming on a course a few months ago but waited until after her marriage to send me feedback

I went on John’s public speaking training earlier this year and I can, hand on heart say, it was one of the most transformative weekends I’ve ever been on. The whole group progressed so much in just two days and it was a really amazing thing to watch and be part of.

For me personally, speaking publicly had filled me with dread for years and I’d shied away from it privately and professionally. But after facing my fear head on in John’s training, and taking his brilliant tips and advice on board, I now feel for the first time in years that I can speak comfortably in front of a group.

I’ve spoken to two large groups of people since then - once in a professional context, to 40 trainee mental health nurses, and most recently at my wedding, to over 200 people. On both occasions, I was able to speak without my nerves getting the better of me. I got across what I wanted to say and I’d go as far to say that I actually enjoyed it. At my wedding, people even came up to me afterwards to say that my speech was brilliant and that I'd come across as really relaxed and confident.

I can’t believe how far I’ve come with something that had scared me for years, and it’s all thanks to John. He’s a brilliant teacher and I'd recommend his training to anyone struggling with this issue.

We all deserve to take our place in the world, to stand up and speak in front of others. And John will show you, using some quite simple techniques, how to do exactly that.

Dear John
Thank you so much for the training. I have described it to my colleagues as ‘transformational’ and ‘life changing’ 😊 but I’ve also completed your feedback questions below so feel free to use any of that.
Very best wishes,
Jo

What did you want from the course?
To be more confident in talking and presenting to an audience and to get over my fears of public speaking.

Did you get it? Definitely. I have yet to put it into practice, but I have a couple of opportunities in August and one at the beginning of September. I am less worried about the prospect of talking to a large group of people and that’s a really good start.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I’m not sure I would want to change anything.

What did you like about the course/facilitation? It felt authentic which is important to me. You have a very ‘human’ way of facilitating which couldn’t have been better for me as I’m not fond of ‘corporate’ facilitation. Honestly it couldn’t have been a better fit for me

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to change the way I felt about public speaking as well as be more comfortable and less anxious speaking Infront of people.twf

Did you get it?
Definitely, the course exceeded my expectations. At first I was sceptical as I was unsure if I could ever get through this fear of public speaking but my mindset and how I interpret public speaking has changed just from the two days training. I feel like a massive weight has been lifted of my shoulders and am excited to put into practice what I have learnt. From comparing myself from the start of the first day to the end of the second I feel incredibly proud of the progress I have made. I recommend this course to everyone!

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Nothing, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I liked the content of the course and how John challenges you on your thoughts, it really has made me think about public speaking in a completely different way. The principles that he teaches definitely work.

Debra, a new workshop leader wanted to feel more comfortable about running her first group…
What did you want from the course?

To understand and get over my hesitancy about public speaking as it’s important for my new business that I feel comfortable holding workshops.

Did you get it?
I did! I held a workshop for an hour and a half 2 weeks after the course and enjoyed it. Feedback from an acquaintance who came and had no idea of my past challenges with this said afterwards I was a natural (!). I felt I got into my stride after about 5 minutes and all my old feelings of nervousness and tight throat never appeared. I had 11 people in my workshop. I found I was able to have a conversation with them all one at a time. I was so focused on the workshop, itself, that I found I didn’t think about my anxiety other than reminding myself a few times of the general principle of engaging them one at a time.
I am super happy!

June 2019

Dear John
Many thanks for your email and the course! I enjoyed it far more that I thought possible, it was a great two days in which I learnt new ways of dealing with my fear of public speaking.
I put it into practice pretty much straight away with a presentation at a conference on 26th June. Amazingly, I actually slept the night before which was a huge help – I’ve put that down to all the perspectives and mechanisms you provided on the course to manage thoughts/ fears, so thank you very much!
On the 26th when I stood up in front of 50/60 people, for the first time I felt more able to address the audience as human rather than experts who all think that I’m stupid. I still needed my notes and have a fair bit of work to do, but I completed the presentation and it was referenced by a number of the other presenters later in the day, so overall I think it was a decent job done.
Huge thanks again,
Kind regards
Claire

What did you want from the course? To have the confidence to speak in front of people without feeling self-conscious and apologetic, which I realise previously had affected my nerves and adrenaline both before and during my ‘performance’…… as I saw it then.

Did you get it? Yes, I did – in a roundabout way. By taking us back to the basics of human interaction and behaviour, I could understand the audience’s response to me and my response to the audience.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation? Nothing – it was a completely new experience which took me right out of my comfort zone.

What did you like about the course/facilitation? Very personal delivery. Nice small group. Felt at ease, and not too embarrassed to become emotional! A feeling of camaraderie encouraged within the group which made ‘experimentation’ much easier.

Please feel free to add any other comments if you wish: A really life-changing experience – not simply a course for public speaking. I wasn’t expecting my response during the course and my attitude following the course. It takes a complete stranger to help you decipher your identity! Thank you John. I aim to go onto bigger and better things and truly feel able to do so – I’m lucky – life is good.

As a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist I thought it was about time I fully faced my own fear of public speaking, John's course completely surpassed my expectations. From being highly anxious and incredibly self-conscious at the start of Day 1, by the end of day 2 I was feeling more relaxed, able to trust in myself and I was actually enjoying public speaking! It has been a month since I attended the course and I have noticed a real difference in how I feel in speaking up and taking some of the attention in social and work situations. John is a compassionate, knowledgeable and inspiring teacher, I can't recommend this course highly enough! Thank you John!

Dear John
The course was absolutely fantastic. I'm not sure quite what I was expecting to be honest, but I certainly didn't think it would encompass far more than public speaking ... for me, the importance of 'being present' and authentic in our every day lives was without question the most important takeaway.

The key techniques which you taught us I have since found invaluable - notably the breathing, use of pauses and also landscape eyes. I've used all of these to varying degrees in the office recently - not in front of big audiences (yet); mostly in 1-2-1 conversations, but they have really helped me to be confident + made me realise that every single person is actually thinking about themselves rather than me!

I could go on. But suffice to say - it was the best course I've probably ever been on. So much so that I'm keen to join another one either later this year or early next !

Thanks again for the course, for the notes, for listening, for caring, for sharing your own story, and for helping people to conquer their fears.
Cheers & catch you soon,
James

Deborah writes about a two day Manchester course
Hi John
The course was really incredible. Thank you so much. I couldn't stop telling the people close to me who I think would really benefit from it, all about it. I hope they will take the plunge and get as much from it as I have. I feel like the course has set in motion a pretty big mental shift and the start of a gradual journey towards where I want to be... I've found myself doing the things that I'd been putting off for fear of judgement, and then I've congratulated myself for doing them and also noticed that nobody else gives a monkeys! I've not spoken in a traditional presentation sense yet, although I've got two opportunities to introduce a speaker coming up in May, and I had a pretty relaxed and effective meeting/chat last week! A first! So here goes...

What did you want from the course?
I felt an inherent disinclination to speak in public, but my job is increasingly calling for it. I was hoping for an introduction to the basic do's and don'ts.

Did you get it?
I got so much more. The course is life changing. It gets right to the root of who you are as a person, shows you where you're holding yourself back, sometimes without realising it, and gives you the confidence to live your full life. The public speaking skills are an added benefit! I can see that it's changing for the better the way that I approach things and the way I reflect on my efforts, which has knock-on benefits for the people in my life. It's a fundamental, liberating shift in the way I operate. I can see opportunities, and myself taking them, in a way that I didn't before. I can say with confidence that the course was the most important two days of my life.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Don't change a thing!

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
Tremendously authentic. You share a lot of yourself and that's appreciated. You're also compassionate and clearly care about every person in the room. Once again, can't thank you enough.

Ellie writes about a two day course in London

What did you want from the course?
To tackle my fear of public speaking and try to understand why it was such a problem for me

Did you get it?
I did. I felt that it really helped me to dive under the blocks and beliefs that were manifesting in such panic whenever I had to face a group of people in a presentation format. I realised this was ultimately more about my fear of not being enough and once I could pinpoint that, and sit with it a bit, along with some helpful phrases and tools to manage the actual physical experience, I was on my way.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Nothing

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
This was such a special experience. I didn't expect to find such a safe, supportive environment with like minded individuals in which to explore my fears.
The diversity of tools, and the emphasis on kindness to self, calmness, relaxing, all helped me to unpick my fears and being a new approach to the way I has been thinking about speaking in public.
John was a brilliant leader in the session; hugely kind, empathetic and generous, drawing on a range of science, psychology, literature and his own experience of this fear - plus the experience of having tutored so many people - to offer us many helpful tools and suggestions. We all found different things provided 'aha' moments or helped us move that bit closer to our goal and it was helpful being able to test then feedback after each exercise -even just the opportunity to voice things you felt silly about and shine a light on being ashamed was of enormous help. The group size was ideal - small enough to bond but big enough to genuinely test ourselves speaking to a group. We all felt supported to the degree that I think we all made huge progress over the course of the weekend.

Please feel free to add any other comments if you wish:
Thanks so much John - this was a real turning point for me and has given me confidence to keep on improving

What actions of confidence are you going to explore in the next two weeks?
I have been practicing 'Assume Support' and chatting more openly to people I don't know, to build that sense of confidence in speaking out and connecting. Remembering that I am enough as I am, and not to take it all so seriously.

Jethro gives me a hug but don’t worry its not compulsory

What did you want from the course?
To feel more comfortable when speaking in front of a large group and understand how to calm nerves and speak calmly.

Did you get it?
Yes

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I genuinely thought it was great and wouldn't change much at all.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
The size of the group was great. The way John delivered the course was fantastic, very engaging with lots of stories.

Please feel free to add any other comments if you wish:
I don't offer hugs to many course leaders but had such a good time and felt a genuine warmth and passion shining through, throughout the two days. A truly fantastic course that not only helped to take the pressure off public speaking but bred a type of self confidence in the entire group that was clearly lacking at the beginning of the event.

Becca is, as they say, a happy bunny!

What did you want from the course?

The dream was to start enjoying public speaking rather than fearing it.

Did you get it?
I did! By the end of the second day I was actually beginning to feel excitement about the idea of public speaking!

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Honestly I can't think of a single thing.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
IT WORKS! The course is really cleverly put together - everything works beautifully to gradually reroute the way you think about public speaking over 2 days. John is a star - clever, caring, funny, empathetic and really supportive. I felt very well taken care of and he went to lengths to build a connection with each one of us, gently pushing us to challenge ourselves.

I never dreamed I would feel excited about the idea of public speaking. Thank you John.

What did you want from the course?
Deal with anxiety and blanking whilst speaking spontaneously. Gain confidence.

Did you get it?
Definitely!

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
It all worked well for me, location, facilities etc.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
It was very relaxed and encouraging.

Please feel free to add any other comments if you wish:
This was the opposite of usual presentations skills courses that obsess on the number of times you say 'ermm' or trip up over your words. This course re-trains your thinking and helps to overcome harmful and untrue beliefs.

What actions of confidence are you going to explore in the next two weeks?
I've done one singing appointment and an unprepared party speech - being comfortable with blank faces has made a huge difference already. Understanding that that is just a normal listening face is a game-changer. Not focusing on presenting and performance, just having a normal chat takes the pressure off.

March 2019

Hi John,
It's Caitlin here, I found your course absolutely fantastic! Whilst challenging at times it was exactly what I needed.
You provided a very safe environment in which I and others were able to step out of our comfort zones and discover what we are really capable of. I really admire the way you brought together a group of complete strangers and created a real connection between us all through our common fear of public speaking and being the centre of attention.

I was very sceptical about how effective this course would be for me, as I have tried countless ways of battling my anxiety (medication, CBT, and more medication), however I always seemed to end up in the same place making no real progress. Within just 2 days, and after a few tears, I felt a weight lift off me and it was the first time I have ever felt so unburdened by my anxiety!
It was a truly liberating feeling and made me realise that a shift in perspective and mindset goes a long way and creates a lot more value than medication and avoidance!

I actually attended a Toastmasters session tonight (it was one of the less formal and more laid back groups I'm glad to say) and as simple as it might seem to everybody else, I stood up to introduce myself and actually quite enjoyed it! This is a HUGE deal for me, as someone who would've bolted out the door at the mention of introducing myself. I didn't recite anything in my head, I just trusted that the words would come and of course they did! I texted my mum after and told her I happily introduced myself to the group and she was over the moon. I am really looking forward to the next session to get stuck in more.

I have been reading your follow up notes religiously and found a YouTube video you created too, which has been very helpful in reinforcing everything!
The work you do is amazing, and it is so so clear that you truly care about what you do. I am glad that my lifetime has overlapped with yours and that I have been able to learn these things from you.
Many many many thanks,
Caitlin

Dear John,
I can't emphasise enough what a pleasure it was to meet you & be part of that wonderful, inspirational group of people.

What I wanted from the course:
To be able to talk to others without going red, or getting the dreaded shaky voice and blank mind. To be able to talk in front of others without it costing me so much.

Did you get it?
It was life changing. I learned that it was ok to be myself. To not have to apologise for taking up room and that at times, having a chat with others could be... dare I say it, enjoyable? fun? Who knew?!

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I loved it. So much, that my only suggestion for any additions would be follow up/progression/consolidation courses. I would definitely find this a useful addition.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
That you are encouraged to be yourself and that John enables this by encouraging small steps, being authentic, genuine and kind. I also loved John's stories. Sad, amusing or courageous. They were touching and memorable.

I was also deeply moved by the group. Seeing other people overcome their struggles was just inspirational. I will always remember those people. They will be with me in every audience whenever I speak.
Thanks so much for everything John, you are a legend.
With thanks & best wishes,

Dear John,
I really can't thank you enough for such a fantastic course it really has helped me beyond belief! I've been to 2 talks and asked questions whoop whoop!!!
Best wishes,
Sarah

What did you want from the course?
To become more confident with public speaking and to be able to ask questions in a talk or meeting and not just keep quiet because I don't want the attention to be on me.

Did you get it?
YES!! And a WHOLE lot more.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
No response

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I thought the size of the group (10 people) was great, not too many people but also not too few. I liked the questions that you asked us after each exercise which really made me think about what we'd just done and how I had found it. I normally hate questions like that!
I really liked that it was first names only to begin with and no questions about what we all did or anything like that but then that people felt so safe to be so open and giving.. I knew it would be emotional in the way that I knew I would be terrified (I try not to use this word any more!) but it was emotional in a totally different and really fantastic way.
The course was fantastic, it pushed me to my absolute limits and further out of my comfort zone then I ever like to be but it was all so so worth it. The first day I was red in the face, sweaty, shaking and thought at one point my heart might actually leave my body as it was thumping so hard and loud! The second day I was probably still red in the face, sweaty and shaking but I could deal with it and accept it and stand up and be OK with being there and talking/having a conversation.
I have got far more out of this course then just some tools for public speaking it has been life changing, I know that may sound a bit cheesy and over the top but it is the truth. I use it every single day in every aspect of my life and I have been practising. I have asked questions in talks and have had to introduce a speaker and have 2 talks lined up.

What actions of confidence are you going to explore in the next two weeks?
It's not all about me but it's OK for me to be here and take the space

Claire, a charity manager, writes about my two day course in Bristol

I can’t thank you enough for last week. I really enjoyed the two days and was so hugely encouraged by everything we covered.

What did you want from the course?

To feel more comfortable being the centre of attention and more confident to speak in front of an audience.

Did you get it?
Yes definitely. John created a safe space for me to step out of my comfort zone and learn to trust myself. He normalised the fears I had of being the centre of attention and at the same time completely reframed how I now view public speaking. I learnt to own my story and be more accepting of who I am. I can’t thank John enough.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
This was one of the best courses I have ever done. I can’t think of any improvements to suggest!

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
The carefully curated exercises John took us through transformed a room full of strangers into a team cheering one another on. I loved his use of stories- the pelican crossing one was one of the most powerful moments of the whole course for me.
A big heartfelt thank you.

What did you want from the course?
To come out of it with greater confidence speaking in public and being comfortable being centre of attention.

Did you get it?
Yes and a lot more.

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
Nothing, I was very happy with it.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
I liked how we were taught what fear is and how our mind responds to fear. I also liked how we were able to learn from others.

John is very skilled at what he does, and has the rare ability to normalise and bring humour to stressful situations that came up when we learning to feel comfortable standing in front of others. I would highly recommend his weekend course, not only to learn new skills in public speaking, but to get in touch with what it means to be your 'self'. In my opinion, the gift of having a teacher who supports and promotes you to be more of 'you' is the best teacher of all! Thank you, John for showing up for us all.

Such an incredibly powerful experience. This course is about so much more than public speaking. To be in a room with like minded individuals is both unique and comforting. John has given me the ability to feel comfortable to just be me...what a burden to lighten!

This course is so much more than public speaking. Being in a room with nine other individuals whom all feel exactly the same about public speaking is both unique and liberating. I learnt that I was not alone. John gave me the tools to teach myself to be confident in my own skin and I soon realised that I have been my own worst critic for my entire life so far. I have come away from the course with an element of excitement about my next talk in public, whether that be a speech or a board meeting. I am enthusiastic about utilising my new found skills and ammunition to slowly conquer my fear whilst embracing my nerves.

Extremely worthwhile 2 days. Gained so much more than I had from reading books on presentations. This is different. Reaches all aspects of life, not just public speaking. Just do it - life is too short not to take your place in this world.

What did you want from the course?
I wanted to gain confidence in presenting/talking in front of people.

Did you get it?
I did

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I thought it was fantastic so it’s difficult to say.

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
The size was perfect, any more people would have been unwieldy and any less, wouldn’t have had the same benefits. The snacks and tea / coffee availability was great. The location was easy to get to and central with plenty of food options nearby. The room was peaceful, I felt like it was a good size, it was calming and private.

Please feel free to add any other comments if you wish:
Thanks John, you seem incredibly authentic and caring and I immediately felt at ease when I met you. I enjoyed the two days immensely. I felt exhausted after but it was well worth it. I have already put in practice the learnings, and I am hopeful I can continue to. I realise it’s not an immediate fix and I have to carry on practicing but the two days experience in front of an audience was invaluable. The practice was something I never could have experienced through reading a book. The recommendation to consider public speaking as having a conversation with each audience member was like a lightbulb switching on in my head. I don’t know why I had never thought of it like this before. I would highly highly recommend this course.

Deena El-Shirbiny, a GP, writes about a two day course in London

What did you want from the course
To tackle my anxiety when talking in front of groups. To harness skills already there

Did you get it?
Yes! Rather than being told 'what to do', this course inspired me to realise I already know how to do it and I have the ability/skills already. (I love this comment, it’s so true, I think confidence is all about trusting ourselves more and getting out of our way. So in a way it’s always been there- thanks Deena for this, John)

What could be improved about the course/facilitation?
I think it was great, unique and wouldn't change anything about it. Only thing I can think of would be a refresher course which is shorter for people who have done it before. to build upon it when they have had time to practice in reality. Perhaps this is already available?

What did you like about the course/facilitation?
Relaxed, slowly built up tackling the underlying reasons people find it hard.

are you sad, now we’ve got to the end?

Where is the rest of the feedback?

First, well done for getting down this far, not many people do. I have feedback going all the way back to 2008 (before then it was hand written!) and it's about 170 A4 pages long so website feedback stops here. But if you want to see a copy - email me and ask me for the full feedback version. But I’m guessing by now you have probably got the idea.
What you could do now is to be the person your fear doesn’t want you to be and have the courage to talk to me or come on a course. Life is too short to live in fear all the time. Courage isn’t the absence of fear, courage is fear walking towards the life you want to lead.
I’ve been working with people whose anxiety has got in the way of their lives for a long time, and it’s possible to change that. You know that because you reached all the way down here. So take a small step and chat to me on Whatsapp, use this link https://wa.me/message/PMWJLAVSAZCWI1 or 07730 550842‬ - And tell me you reached the bottom of the feedback. Not many people do!
